Objectives:
Students will be able to summarize major actions and conflicts in
Elie Wiesels Night in small group and whole class discussions
Students will be able to write clear, formal responses and use
proper writing conventions (syntax, grammar, spelling).
Students will be able to analyze the themes, issues, and authors
perspective in Night and use the text to support written and oral
responses

Lesson

Opening (7 min)
Greet the class and instruct students to get into their
teams and review what they read for their homework.

Review Activity (10 min)


Briefly review tone and Wiesels use of setting to convey
a specific tone. Have students identify passages in the
reading that convey a specific tone and share them with
a partner. Then, have students share their responses in
a group discussion.

Quick Write (25 min)


Have students open the novel Night and share
descriptive passages that stood out to them. Discuss
the tone used in sections 4 and 5 of the novel. Review
the Quick Write Rubric, then post writing prompt:
o How does the author use setting to convey a
specific tone? Support your response with
evidence from the novel.
Instruct students to share their responses with their
teammates, and then call on a few volunteers to share
their answers with the class.

Tagxedo Activity (15 min)


Students will go to Tagxedo (www.tagxedo.com ) and
create a word cloud using their Quick Write response.
Students will save their word cloud images, then share
these with two other students.

Closure (3 min)
Review the lesson and remind learners of their
homework assignment.
