QUESTIONS TO CONSIDER
What can we learn from the title
and caption?
An artist in the Daily Herald.
A British popular newspaper selling to
the working classes. This cartoon
suggests that even ordinary British
people felt the Treaty was a failure.

What is this child doing ? How

old will he be in 1940 if he is a
child in 1919? How does his
crying link to the title?
Clemenceau (the Tiger) hears a
baby weeping; it is labelled 1940
class (= liable for call-up in 1940).
The child is weeping because he is
going to be cannon-fodder in 1940.
The Treaty will not bring a lasting
peace there will be another world
war in 20 years time.
Why is the child naked and what
does it represent?
The child is naked -Nakedness carries
connotations of innocence and
helplessness.
The war will not be the childs fault,
but the fault of the Big Four and the
treaty they have made.

Source A: the Daily

Herald.
A British popular
newspaper selling to
the working classes.

Who are these men and what are

they doing?
Four figures are leaving the building.
They represent the Big Four: Lloyd
George, Orlando, (at the back to
represent a junior member)
Clemenceau (the Tiger) and Wilson.
The Big Four have made the Treaty
and believe that they have finished
their work. Clemenceau is in front of
Wilson and Lloyd George to show that
The Tiger was the main decision
maker and beneficiary of the Treaty.
What is the comment at the foot
of this cartoon saying?
The date of the cartoon is 17 May
1919, this was soon after the Treaty
was presented to the Germans, but
this was BEFORE the Germans signed
the Treaty it is a sign that British
people were already starting to doubt
that the treaty was fair. And this is
signified by Clemenceau not
recognising the impact it is likely to
have.
What does the piece of paper
signify on the floor?
The child has thrown the Peace
Treaty on the floor. Throwing
something down is an act of anger
and despair. The Treaty is useless
because it will not do what a treaty
is supposed to do stop another
war happening.

ACTIVITY FIVE

PEER
ASSESSMENT

LEVEL ONE: Message given but no use of the cartoon

or own knowledge (e.g.) The message is the Versailles
Treaty would result with another war in 21 years. (1-2)
LEVEL TWO: Cartoon details used to explain the
message of the cartoon (e.g.) The cartoonist thought
the Treaty of Versailles would result with another war in
21 years. I know this because it shows Germany as a
naked child. He is defenceless, crying and humiliated.
(3-4)
LEVEL 3: As above but own knowledge will be used.
Something that you could not work out from the
cartoon (e.g.) From my own knowledge I know that
Clemenceau was the leader of France and he wanted
the most revenge for all the damage caused to him
country during the war. He would have been pleased
that Germany had to pay 6,600 in compensation but
would have wanted even more. (5-6)
