I still have good

organizational
skills

I was a good selfadvocate but I

didnt really
know exactly
what I was
allowed to get

I now understand
exactly what is on
my IEP and what I
am entitled to

I think I am
good where I
am but I might
improve on the
organization of
stuff around me
I think I can
work on
knowing how
to get what I
need onto my
IEP if it isnt
there yet

I was comfortable
I am now
with the people I comfortable with a
know and was
lot of people and
able to work with
can work with
people I didnt
people even if I
know and I
just met them
learned how to be however I might
comfortable with

I am now able to
try and make sure
I have less stress
by procrastinating
less

I hope to get
better at
working with
people and
getting better
marks with
them as
opposed to
getting better
marks alone
I would like to
learn more
strategies for
studying and
try and study
for all tests
I would like to
learn ways to
get rid of all
my stress all
together

How Im going
to get there

I can do this by
asking my
teachers if they
would allow me
certain things and
ask them how to
officially add it to
my IEP
I can lower my
expectations of
people as I have
really high
expectations when
working in a
group and I can let
go of some of the
control I take in a
project so people
will work with me
better
I can ask friends
for ideas on how
they study and
take classes to
learn study skills

A Letter
Dear SERT,
I am Ilan Orzech. I am 14 years old, and I have ADHD. I enjoy watching TV
shows and movies. I am good at, and enjoy building things from wood. I enjoy
science and business and am currently a part of DECA. I have ADHD and I have
some anger issues. I have very good self-advocacy skills, work habits, creativity
and confidence. I struggle with my fine motor skills, specifically penmanship, as
well as anxiety management skills and attention skills. An accommodation I find
very helpful is the use of my computer in class and during tests. Not only does it
make my work legible but it also helps me be more organized. I cannot lose
handouts or supplies as they are all on my computer. Due to the fact that I have
been using a computer for my work for several years, my typing skills have
become quite good. Because of this, I tend to get work done in class a bit faster
then others. I also get tests done faster so I have more time to check over my work.
This past semester I learned that I am quite good in business and felt success when
I did exceptionally well in DECA as well as getting close to a 95% in business.
Two goals I have for the upcoming semester and year are: 1. Getting at least an
83% in all my courses. 2. Doing well in DECA. I will achieve these goals by: 1.
Working more diligently and studying more. 2. Getting help from the executives

for things I dont understand and making sure my group members do their share of
the work.
Thank you for the support you will be offering,
Sincerely,

Self Reflection
I feel like I have changed significantly as a learner over this past semester. I have
become more responsible when it comes to completeing assignments on time. At
my old school, there was a bit more leniancy when it comes to late assignments,
but in high school, they seem to be more strict. I am a tactile/kinesthetic learner
and I look at things with a logical mindset. I am good when it comes to using
technology, especially typing. I find that not only does the use of a computer make
my work more legible, it also makes me finish my work faster and usally better. I
think that the culminating assignment was not that useful for me. I feel this because
I havent noticed any benefits from it, yet. I think, since it has baisically just been a
culmination of things I already have, we have been given too much time to
complete it. In Grade 9 Learning Strategies, I have learned to be more patient. This
is beneficial for me in the future because I need to be able to just sit and listen and
wait until the people around me are ready. I have also learned to pick things
relating to my education more carefully. I now know that I should pick who Im
working with on a group project with some thought behind it so that I can get the
best mark possible. I also need to make sure my study space is free of distractions
in order to study properly. The first piece of advice I would give to a new grade 9
student is to make sure you sign up for a test in special education. You should do
this a few days before the test so that, one, special-ed knows, and two, incase you

24

Ilan Orzech

21 Jan 2015

are sick the day before the test and cannot sign up. I also suggest that you know
who your SERT is and that you dont hesitate to ask them any questions that you
may have. It is important that your SERT knows if something is wrong as they
might be able to help you. The last piece of advice would be to take Learning
Strategies in grade 9. It is a good course to take because it can teach you some
good skills. It also helps to see your SERT everyday so you can talk to them if you
have a problem during class, or right after.
