Student Learning Outcomes (Goals): During this lesson, students will have the opportunity to
learn more about sharks through reading an informational text entitled, About Sharks, by
Susanna Batchelor. The students will gain additional knowledge and learn interesting facts by
reading this passage as well as participating in a Think-Pair-Share activity following the reading
of the passage. Students will also have the opportunity to work on putting together various shark
puzzles after the reading.

Procedure:
1. Explain to the students that today they will be learning more about sharks by
reading an informational text.
2. Hand out the informational text entitled, Facts About Sharks, by Susanna
Batchelor to the students. This handout can be found here: Facts About Sharks
3. Display a digital version of the text on the SmartBoard. The digital version can

4. Explain to the students that you will be reading the text to them and that they
should follow along either on their own handout or by looking at the
SmartBoard.
5. After the passage has been read, have the students participate in a Think-PairShare activity and take out a piece of paper and a pencil. To learn more about

6. Students can discuss with a partner what new information they learned about
sharks after reading the passage, how their opinion has or has not changed
about sharks after reading the passage, and any other questions they might have
about sharks. Students should write down some of their ideas and discussion on
a sheet of paper.
7. Invite some students to share some facts they learned, opinions, or questions
with the class.
8. When students are done, they can put together various shark puzzles as a fun
hands-on activity.
