ISO 14004 Environmental Management Systems General guidelines on principles,

systems and support techniques


Information note on revision scope, process and time lines
This information provides information on the scope, process and timeline of the on-going revision of ISO
14004. It will be updated as the revision progresses.
What is the scope?
ISO 14004 revision was agreed by ballot of National Member Bodies in late 2011. It has been initiated
six months later than the revision of ISO 14001 to allow ISO 14001 to develop further before guidance is
developed.
The revision shall:
1. better reflect the title and scope of ISO 14004 in its contents with particular emphasis on:
a. users' needs
b. how an organization may maintain and improve an EMS
c. implementation of environmental management requirements into the organization's
overall management system
2. reflect the text of ISO 14001 as it emerges from its revision
3. contain issues from the ISO/TC207/SC1 Future Challenges for EMS Study Group.
Who is responsible for the revision?
The revision is being carried out by experts nominated by their National Member Bodies. The experts are
working by consensus to agree the revised text of ISO 14004. The working group (WG6) is being led by
Per Arne Syrrist and the secretary is Knut Jonassen (Standards Norway).
