4. FIRST-AID MEASURES
In case of accident or if you feel unwell, seek medical advice immediately (show the label where possible).
Inhalation:
Skin Contact:
Eye Contact:
Ingestion:

Remove patient from exposure, keep warm and at rest.

Obtain medical attention if ill effects occur.
Remove contaminated clothing.
Wash skin with water.
If symptoms develop, obtain medical attention.
Immediately irrigate with eyewash solution or clean water, holding the eyelids apart, for at least 10
minutes. Obtain immediate medical attention.
Do not induce vomiting.
Wash out mouth with water and give 200-300 ml (half a pint) of water to drink.
Obtain medical attention.

Further Medical Treatment

Symptomatic treatment and supportive therapy as indicated.

5. FIRE-FIGHTING MEASURES
Non-combustible.
Discharged catalyst may be pyrophoric (see Process Hazards).
Extinguishing Media:
Fire Fighting Protective Equipment:

As appropriate for surrounding materials/equipment.

Suitable respiratory protection.

6. ACCIDENTAL RELEASE MEASURES

Do not allow to enter drains, sewers or watercourses.
Collect spillages by mechanical means.
Control dust formation.
Transfer to a container for disposal or recovery.

7. HANDLING AND STORAGE

7.1 HANDLING
Avoid exposure. Obtain special instructions before use.
Control dust formation.
Avoid contact with eyes.
Avoid prolonged skin contact.
Do not breathe dust. Atmospheric levels should be controlled in compliance with the occupational exposure limit.
Process Hazards
The reduced catalyst should not be exposed to gases containing carbon monoxide at temperatures between 50 Deg C and
200 Deg C because of the danger of formation of nickel carbonyl under these conditions.
Prior to discharge the catalyst may contain residual hydrocarbons or deposited carbon and should be regarded as
potentially pyrophoric when it is hot. Catalyst used for this duty should be purged free of hydrocarbons with an inert gas
and cooled before it is discharged. Pyrophoric catalysts can act as a source of ignition and should be kept away from
combustible materials. As a minimum, water hoses should be available at the discharge point in case it is necessary to
wet the catalyst.
Keep the discharged catalyst away from mineral acids to avoid the generation of hydrogen sulphide.
Further advice is given in the Johnson Matthey publication 'Catalyst Handling'.

10. STABILITY AND REACTIVITY

Hazardous Reactions:
Hazardous Decomposition Product(s):

See Process Hazards section for hazards associated with the discharged
catalyst resulting from its intended use.
None known.

11. TOXICOLOGICAL INFORMATION

This health hazard assessment is based on a consideration of the composition of this product.
Inhalation
Dust is irritant to the respiratory tract.
Skin Contact
Repeated or prolonged skin contact may result in mild irritation. By analogy with similar preparations this material is
unlikely to be a skin sensitiser.
Eye Contact
Irritating to eyes.
Ingestion
Low oral toxicity, but ingestion may cause irritation of the gastrointestinal tract.
Long Term Exposure
Harmful : danger of serious damage to health by prolonged exposure through inhalation and if swallowed. Symptoms of
chronic over exposure in humans may include adverse effects on the liver.
May cause cancer by inhalation.
There has been an increased incidence of respiratory cancer associated with nickel refinery operations. Nickel oxide was
identified as one of the substances in the complex mixture to which exposure occurred.
Studies in animals using routes of exposure relevant to man have not produced an excess of cancer.
Nickel and nickel compounds are classified in certain countries as potential carcinogens. However, the handling and use
of this product in line with Section 7, is not expected to pose a carcinogenic risk.

12. ECOLOGICAL INFORMATION

Environmental Fate and Distribution
The product is essentially insoluble in water.
WGK number
WGK 1 (according to VwVwS, Annex 4)

13. DISPOSAL CONSIDERATIONS

Dispose of through the metal recovery industry or through the 'Johnson Matthey Catalyst Care' programme. Disposal
should be in accordance with local, state or national legislation.
Used catalyst may have different hazards or properties from the new material. This safety data sheet does not apply to the
used catalyst.
