Hello and welcome to Science 10! This course will be an exciting chance for us to
explore some important themes, topics, and issues in science and I hope that by the
end of the semester, you will have found something to spark your interest. I also
hope that we will enjoy getting to know each other, sharing our thoughts, and
deepening our learning. I think it is going to be an awesome semester and I am truly
looking forward to seeing what new things we uncover

Course Description:
Science 10 is an integrated academic course that helps students better understand
and apply fundamental concepts and skills common to biology, chemistry, physics,
and the Earth sciences. The goal of this course is to examine various aspects of
these four sciences and to introduce you to scientific thinking and experimentation.
Below are the topics/units we will cover in this course:

Unit and topics covered

1) Energy and Matter in Chemical Change
(Chemistry)
2) Energy Flow in Technological Systems (Physics)
3) Cycling of Matter in Living Systems (Biology)
4) Energy Flow in Global Systems (Earth Science)

Expectations: In order to master concepts, extra practice is continually required.

Students are required to complete all assignments and readings, whether in
attendance or not. Students will be given sufficient time to complete assignments in
class (as much as possible), however, out of class study time is essential if students
are to do their best in this course. I have high expectations of all my students and
believe that participation in class activities, attending class, monitoring your own
learning, and seeking outside help when needed are keys to success in Science 10.

Additionally, students are expected to arrive on time to class, bring all necessary
materials, and follow the class agreement.

Examination Rules: Students are responsible to bring all examination materials

to class before the exam. Sharing of materials during an exam is not allowed.
Cheating will not be tolerated. A deferred exam will be given only when exceptional
circumstances prevent the student from writing at the scheduled time.
Arrangements made within a reasonable time are required.

Lab Safety: It is the students responsibility to conduct themselves with all

necessary caution and due care while conducting experiments. Those students who
demonstrate lack of responsibility in the laboratory will be suspended from the
laboratory and will receive a mark of zero for that lab.

Assessment and Marking: Your final mark will be determined by the following:
Labs
Assignments and Projects
Quizzes
Unit tests (4 total)
Final Exam

20%
15%
15%
30%
20%

The majority of your grade will be determined by the final exam, unit tests, and
weekly quizzes. Additionally, each unit will have a few major labs, assignments, and
projects that will give you an alternative way to demonstrate your learning and
development of various skills. Criteria and grading procedures for these projects will
always be made known to you and you should expect that self- and/or peerassessments will be involved in most assignments. Marks are updated in
PowerSchool once a week, usually occurring on a weekend. If an assignment has not
been handed in, a zero will be placed in PowerSchool as a placeholder until the
assignment has been completed. If you ever have any questions about how you are
graded, please ask!
Homework and small in class assignments will be used for the purpose of improving
learning through descriptive feedback and reflection. Although not everything that
is assigned will count towards your final grade, all assignments MUST be completed
to a sufficient quality. Therefore, you are expected to complete assignments on time
and properly.
If you are excused from a class you will also be excused from any labs or
quizzes during that lesson; however, all assignments must be completed
and handed in. Late assignments will be accepted upon discussion with
the teacher and only if that assignment has not already been handed back
to the rest of the class. If it has, the student must arrange to complete the
assignment during a focus block in my class.
