Project Serve Proposal
The general area of interest for my project is in spreading music. I chose this area
because I love music and have talent in it which I can share with other people, but mostly
because an opportunity to teach presented itself and I took it. My experience in the area is
years of piano and singing, especially singing in church choir, which is what I will be
teaching. I hope to show the children at my church how to use their voices well and to be
familiar with the repertoire, as well as to teach them a little basic theory. I know this
material well already, so what I hope to gain from the project will be the skill of teaching
young children, which involves maintaining focus and control while foremost keeping
things fun.
The only people involved in this project will be the children of which there are
about twenty, me as teacher, and the choir director, Nadine Kalinin, who also has much
choral knowledge and will be my mentor. The costs for me will be littleonly the time
spent every other week throughout this school year planning the next lesson and teaching
ittotaling about an hour a week. The only resources I will need will be the repertoire of
the Sunday liturgy and optional counseling and advice from the priest or choir director on
leading a group. I foresee no problems created by this project.
My project will serve my church community at St. Nicholas Orthodox Church in
San Anselmo by sharing music appreciation and ability with the children of the parish.
I've chosen to support this community because this community has supported me my
whole life and taught me to sing, so I in turn would give back to the children there. I will
be addressing the need for the children to pay attention and even enjoy the hour and a
half long service every week by giving them the tools and also the desire to participate in
the service, and I will also be addressing the need to increase congregational singing
rather than just the choir performing, which will hopefully make the service more fruitful
for everyone in attendance. I will know I've made a difference when I see these kids
singing during the service of their own accord, having learned the hymns and having the
desire to participate. The people of this community will also see and hear this difference,
especially the parents. The rest of the community may or may not benefit from that
change, but in my opinion a small child joining their voice with their faith community is
a simple and lovely thing.
