This article defines assessment and a few

strategies that may be used.

Assessment is the process of gathering data. More

specifically, assessment is the ways instructors gather
data about their teaching and their students learning
(Hanna & Dettmer, 2004).

This article also discusses the different

ways in which students can be assessed. It
is important to assess students in several
different ways over the course of even just
one assignment.

Data provides a picture of a range of activities using

different forms of assessment such as: pre-tests.
Observations and examinations. Once these data are
gathered, you can then evaluate the students
performance (Hanna & Dettmer, 2004).

Knowing the level of understanding with

each student can help the teacher create
and modify lessons that strengthen their
weaknesses.

Diagnostic assessment can help you identify your

students current knowledge of a subject, their skill sets
and capabilities, and to clarify misconceptions before
teaching takes place. Knowing students strengths and
weaknesses can help you better plan what to teach and
how to teach it (Hanna & Dettmer, 2004).

It is important to test students in a

formative way because it allows more
freedom in how the students will be
evaluated.

Formative assessment provides feedback and

information during the instructional process, while
learning is taking place, and while learning is occurring.
Formative assessment measures student progress but it
can also assess your own progress as an instructor
(Hanna & Dettmer, 2004).

In the future I would like to add this form

of assessment in my classroom because it
provides anonymous and quick results.
This will help me assess as a class. If I see
a pattern where most of my students dont
understand, there might have been a
weakness in my teaching that specific
area.

Clickers are interactive devices which can be used to

assess students current knowledge on specific content
(Hanna & Dettmer, 2004).

In an art class, rubrics are very helpful

because it takes place after the learning
has been completed. Students are to also
follow along the rubric so they understand
their expectation.

Summative assessment takes place after the learning

has been completed and provides information and
feedback that sums up the teaching and learning process
(Hanna & Dettmer, 2004).
