Recommendation #11

The Safety of Students on Wells Street at 14th and 15th Streets

Intersections

Authors: Senators Jonathan Giel and Meghan Ladwig

Sponsors: Senators Justin Phillips, Tip McGuire, Abe Matthew, and Shazia Ali

Whereas: Pedestrian safety on and around the Marquette University campus is a

constant concern for all members of the Marquette community; and,

Whereas: Last November, members of the Marquette University Student

Government had the opportunity to sit down with Alderman Bauman and
city engineers to discuss pedestrian safety; and,

Whereas: During the month of December, city engineers conducted pedestrian

and traffic studies along Wells Street; and,

Whereas: In January, Alderman Bauman and city engineer Robert Bryson

presented the results of their studies to several students and Carol
Winkel of the Office of Public Affairs; and,

Whereas: The results of the studies proved that it was unsafe to cross Wells Street
at the intersections of 14th and 15th Streets; and,

Whereas: City engineer Robert Bryson provided a possible solution that would
involve construction of a median on Wells Street to facilitate safer
pedestrian crossing; and,

Whereas: During at work session held in April, the Alderman and city engineers
proposed their plan for a median on Wells Street to several
administrators of Marquette University, key stakeholders in the 4th
District of Milwaukee, and several students and was widely accepted;
and,

Whereas: The planned median would start midblock between 16th and 15th streets
and will continue to midblock between 14th and 13th street, with a similar
look to the Wisconsin Avenue median; and,

Therefore: Let it be recommended that the Marquette University

administration support the plan for a median as proposed by Alderman
Bob Bauman and the Department of Public Works in the interest of
pedestrian safety.
