Points,

lines and planes

LT 1A: I can explain the dierence
between undened concepts (point, line
and plane) and terms (classifying and
naming angles, perpendicular line, parallel
line, and line segment.) I can draw and
explain the deniDons of these concepts.

Exploring+the+Point,+Line,+and+Plane
+Postulates.pdf

A. Terminology
1. Collinear: Points that lie on the same line are
collinear.
2. Coplanar: Points or lines that lie on the same
plane are coplanar.
3. Skew: Lines that are neither parallel nor
intersect are skew. They lie in dierent planes.

A. Terminology
4. Parallel lines are lines in the same plane that
do not intersect. They have the same slope.
5. Perpendicular lines are lines that intersect to
form right angles. They have opposite
reciprocal slopes.

B. Visual
A point is a loca9on
in space. It has no
dimension and is
represented by a
dot.
We represent points using
dots and capital leDers.
We name points by their
leDer.

Line: Innitely
many points that
extend forever in
both direc9ons.
(always straight)
We name lines by
two points on the
line or by a
lowercase script
leDer

We name planes by
a capital script
leDer or three non-
collinear points on
the plane.

Plane: a at surface
made up of points that
extends innitely
(forever) in all
direc9ons.

2. We do
How many dierent ways can you name the purple plane?
How would you name the intersecDon of the two planes?
Which point(s) is/are on both planes?
What is the intersecDon of the two lines?

D. Dened Terminology
1. Ray: Contains one endpoint and extends
innitely in one direcDon.
2. Segment: A line that has two denite
endpoints.
3. Opposite Rays: Two rays that start o with a
common endpoint and go o in exactly
opposite direcDons.

F. Basic Angles Terminology

1. Straight Angle: An angle whose measure is 180.
2. Acute Angle: An angle whose measure is less than 90
3. Obtuse Angle: An angle whose measure is more than
90.
4. Right Angle: An angle whose measure is 90.
5. Adjacent Angles: Two angles that share a common
side and vertex, but no common interior points
6. Complementary Angles: Two angles whose sum is 90
7. Supplementary Angles: Two angles whose sum is 180
8. VerDcal Angles: Two pairs of opposite rays that share
a common vertex and are congruent.

J. Angle Pairs Terminology

1. Same-Side Interior Angles: Angles inside the two parallel
lines on the same side of the transversal. Same side
interior angles are supplementary.
2. Alternate Interior Angles: Angles inside the two parallel
lines on opposite sides of the transversal. Alternate
interior angles are congruent.
3. Alternate Exterior Angles: Angles outside the two parallel
lines on opposite sides of the transversal. Alternate
exterior angles are congruent.
4. Corresponding Angles: When a parallel line is cut by a
transversal, corresponding angles are angles in the same
posiDon at each intersecDon (matching spots!).
Corresponding angles are congruent.

M. Copying a Segment Notes

To copy a segment:
1. Draw a ray
2. Measure the length of the original segment using your
compass.
3. Mark the length on your ray.
4. Mark the intersecDon of the arc and ray to make a segment
congruent to the original segment.

N. Copying a Segment Visual

O. BisecDng an Angle Notes

1. Construct an arc crossing both sides of the angle.
2. Construct an arc in the interior of the angle puong
the compass on one side of the angle where the arc
crosses it.
3. Without changing the compass measure, put the
point of the compass on the other side of the angle
where the arc crosses it and draw an arc on the
interior of the angle.
4. Draw the angle bisector of the angle with the point
where the two arc cross from the previous steps.
