Email: hayler_e@surreyschools.ca
Course website: misshayler.weebly.com
Course Learning Objectives:
This course is designed to give you an early introduction to basic life skills needed when you live
on your own. In addition, this course gives an introduction to future Foods and Textiles courses
offered at Johnston Heights. Students will experience hands on learning of applied skills in the
areas of Textiles (sewing), and Information Technology (TBA). This course will also give ample
opportunity to engage in design and embrace your creative side.
In the Textiles section, students will learn to operate a sewing machine safely. You will be
introduced to basic sewing skills involved in using fabric and following a pattern through to
construct an apron. In the Information Technology area of this course, it is unclear at this time
where our studies will lead us Students are encouraged to share their ideas with Miss Hayler to
help decide what direction to take this part of the course. I promise to try and make this part of the
course fun and unique!
In addition to practicing skills, we will engage in inquiry as we explore issues pertaining to Foods
and Textiles and their relationship to culture, society, environment, politics, economics, and more.
We will do this by engaging in lots of discussion, completing small research assignments, reading
and viewing of important texts, and considering ideas and opinions critically.
My goal is that you enjoy coming to class and your joy for Home Economics grows and you
develop skills and learn more about related issues, in what I hope will be a joyful, engaging and
welcoming classroom environment.
