Graphing Systems of Equations
Whats the point? (hehe)

Graphs with multiple equations are often used in business models to represent production
costs and commercial sales
o Example: The point of intersection of multiple graphs signifies when a company has
broken even
Even though a computer will probably generate the graph for you by the time you are an
extremely successful entrepreneur or businessman/business woman, it is important to
remember how to interpret!

Possible Number of Solutions

A solution means a point of intersection where the two graphs (lines) cross.
Exactly One

Infinite

No Solution

Consistent Systems

If a system (two lines- represented by graphs or equations) has _________________ solution

it is said to be _____________________. The graphs intersect at one point OR many points.
o What does it mean for two lines to share many points?

If a consistent system has EXACTLY one solution, it is said to be ___________________.

If a consistent system has an INFINITE number of solutions, it is said to be
_______________________.

Inconsistent Systems

If a system has NO solutions, it is said to be _________________.

The graphs (lines) are ___________________. They never touch!

Describe the systems below using the appropriate terminology: inconsistent or consistent (if
consistent is it dependent or independent?).

Solving by Graphing
Step 1: Graph the system (each equation) on the same coordinate plane.
Reminder: Put equation into y=mx+b form, graph the y-intercept (b) first then use slope
(m) to count
Step 2: Determine the number of solutions (How many times do the lines cross?)
Step 3: If the system has ONE SOLUTION, name it (What is the ordered pair for the point where
they cross?)
*Why do we not have to write the solutions out if there are more than one?

Example:

y=3 x+10 y=x 2

System:

How many solutions to the

system?
a. None
b. One
c. Infinite
If there is only ONE solution,
what is it?

Check: Plug the ordered pair

back into the

equations to see if your solution is

y=3 x+10

PRACTICE:
System:

2 x y=14 x=2 y=6

correct!

y=x2

Rewrite in y=mx+b

How many solutions to the

system?
d. None
e. One
f. Infinite

Rewrite in y=mx+b

If there is only ONE solution,

what is it?

6.1 Day 1 Homework: Graphing Systems of Equations

**Reminder- you may not have to rewrite each equation into y=mx+b form every time
(sometimes its given to you that way!)

1) System:

y=3 y=x3

Rewrite in y=mx+b

How many solutions to the

system?
g. None
h. One
i. Infinite
Rewrite in y=mx+b

2) System:

If there is only ONE solution,

what is it?

y=x6 y =x+2

Rewrite in y=mx+b

How many solutions to the

system?
j. None
k. One
l. Infinite

Rewrite in y=mx+b

3) System:

If there is only ONE solution,

what is it?

x+ y=43 x +3 y=12

Rewrite in y=mx+b

How many solutions to the

system?
m. None
n. One
o. Infinite

Rewrite in y=mx+b

If there is only ONE solution,

what is it?

Turn to page 336 in your textbook. Answer questions #10 12 (about the picture) on your
worksheet.

Why was there no answer of consistent and dependent? (What does a consistent & dependent
system look like?)
