Mexico has three main climate zones based on altitude: the hot coastal lowlands, the temperate middle elevations, and the cold highlands. Rainfall patterns vary by region, with northern Mexico receiving little rain year-round. Mexico's physical geography and climate have created three main economic regions - the industrial north, the populous and agriculturally productive center, and the poorer south dominated by subsistence farming and plantations in the lowlands. Mexico has a large and growing economy based around industry, services, oil production, and agricultural exports.
