What is Umrah and why perform it

Introduction:
Meaning of Umrah:
The word `Umrah in common speech means "visit", but in the
terminology of Shari`ah it means paying a visit to the House of
Allah (the Holy Ka'bah) in a specific form.

Significance of Umrah:
Umrah is a Sunnah act of the Holy Prophet Muhammad(s.a.w). It
is amongst the best deeds one can perform when pleasing
Allah(s.w.t). Ibn Umar(r.a) reported that Prophet(s.a.w) said:
‘The warrior in the cause of Allah, the pilgrim and the one who is
performing Umrah are all the delegation of Allah. He called them
and they responded and they will ask of His bestowals and He
will give it to them.’ (Ibn Majah)

When is Umrah performed

Umrah is performed at any time of the year except for the five
days of Hajj. In these days, it is disliked to perform Umrah.

What do we get from Umrah

The virtues of Umrah are priceless to any Muslim and it is
therefore referred to as a minor Hajj in authentic ahadith.
Prophet Muhammad (s.a.w) has linked a number of Ahadith
about wonderful blessings of Allah and rewards of performing
Umrah. Let’s learn some of the virtues of Umrah in the light of
Hadith.
5

Dua is answered:
It is very clear from ahadith that Allah(s.w.t) loves those who
perform Hajj and Umrah. Ibn Maajah reports that the
Prophet(s.a.w) said:

"The performers of Hajj and Umrah are deputations of Allah

(s.w.t). He called them and they responded Him. If they ask him
for anything, He bestows it upon them."

Removal for the sins:

Umrah is a great opportunity to get a lot of reward from Allah
(s.w.t) and cleanse your soul from past committed sins. We
should strive to perform Umrah multiple times in our lives
because it removes our sins. Prophet (s.a.w) said:

Meaning: One Umrah is an expiation for the sins committed

between it and another Umrah. (Bukhari, Muslim)

Protection from poverty

Performing Umrah protects you from poverty. Ibn Masaood(r.a)
reported that the Prophet(s.a.w) said: ‘Follow up the Hajj and
Umrah, because they certainly remove poverty and sins as fire
separates the impurities from iron, gold and silver.’ (Tirmidhi).
6

The reward of performing Umrah in Ramadhan

the Holy Prophet(s.a.w) has mentioned great rewards of
performing Umrah, especially in the month of Ramadan. Ibn
Abbas(r.a) reports that the Holy Prophet(s.a.w) said:

Meaning: Umrah performed in the month of Ramadan will equal

(in rewards) to that of Hajj or Hajj performed with me. (Bukhari)

How to perform Umrah:

Get knowledge before you leave
Those who intend to perform Umrah are supposed to learn the
basics of this act of worship including the obligatory actions and
what makes Umrah null. In this section we will be learning the
procedure of Umrah, Inshallah.

Four steps Of Umrah:

1. Entering the state of Ihram
2. Tawaf of the Holy Kabah
3. Saee between the hills of Safa and Marwah
4. Tahallul: Coming out of Ihraam by shaving or trimming the
hair

1. Entering the state of Ihram

 The literal meaning of Ihram is to make haraam (forbidden).
When a haji pronounces the Niyyah (intention) of Umrah and
7

utters Talbiyah, certain halaal (permissible) things become

haraam for him. That’s why it is called Ihraam.
 The two sheets that a haji wears are also known as Ihram but
the real Ihram is Niyyah & Talbiyah. So, if someone wears
these two sheets and does not declare his intention and utter
Talbiyah, he does not become a Muhrim.
 You have to wear Ihram before passing Miqaat. If you live in
Makkah, just go out of Haram and wear Ihram for Umrah.
Miqaats are the stations you are supposed to be in Ihram
before crossing them. These are the Miqaats:
1. Zul-Hulaifa: for those coming from Madinah.
2. Juhfa: for those coming from Syria.
3. Yalamlam: for those coming from Yamen.
4. Zat-e-Irq: for those coming from Iraq.

How to enter Ihraam:

 Take a bath with the intension of Ihram or do wudu.
 Both men and women should wear the flip-flops (Hawai
Chappal ) so that middle bones of the upper part of the feet
8

are not covered. (You do this before making intention of

Ihram)
 If it is not makruh (undesirable) time, offer two rakahs of
nafl for Ihram. Preferably read Surah Al-kaafiroon in the first
raka’at and Surah Ikhlas in the second raka’at.

Intention and Talbiyah

 Now remove cap from your head and declare your intention.

Meaning: O Allah! I make intention of Umrah. So, make it easy

for me and accept it from me.

 Immediately after that utter the words of Talbiyah three times

(in a loud voice by men and in a subdued voice by women.)

Meaning: I am present. Oh Allah I am present. You have no

partner, I am present. Indeed all praise and bounty is for You and
the entire universe. You have no partner.

 Read Durood-e-Ibrahimi and make Duas.

 Keep reciting Talbiyah during your travel for Umrah.

Prohibitions of Ihram
After intention and Talbiyah, you are in the state of Ihram
and from now on you should not do acts that are forbidden in
Ihram.

 Its game must not be frightened
 Articles lost in it must not be picked up except by someone
making announcement to find the owner.
10

Entering Masjid-e-Haram
Enter Masjid al-Haram with right foot first, preferable through
Bab as-Salam, saying this dua.

 Make intention of Itikaaf. It will multiply your reward of

Umrah.
 Keep reciting Talbiyah

First Sight of the Holy Kabah:

At your first sight of the holy Ka’bah

 keep your eyes fixed at Baitullah and standing at one side,

say three times

 Read Durood-e-Ibrahimi
 Make dua for whatever you wish. This is special time for
acceptance of prayers.
 Now, keep saying Talbiyah and move to perform Tawaf of
Ka’bah.

2. Tawaf of the Holy Kabah

Tawaf means circling around the Holy Kabah seven times.

Preparation for Tawaf:

 Pass the upper sheet of Ihram from underneath the right arm
and put it on the left shoulder. This is Adhtibaa.
11

 Wudu is essential for Tawaf.

 As soon as you reach Hajar-e- Aswad, stop reciting Talbiyah.

Intention for Tawaaf:

Making intention before Tawaf is essential. Make intention
saying the following words. If you forget it you can make
intention in any language or just make an intention in your heart.

Meaning: Oh Allah, I make intention to perform seven rounds of

Tawaaf of Your Baitul-Haraam. (Sincerely) for Allah. Therefore,
make it easy for me and accept it from me.

Istilaam
 Stand in front of Ka’bah facing Hajar-e-Aswad (the Black
Stone) in such a way that Hajre-e-Aswad is on your right side.
You may get help from the green light to achieve this end. This
light should be on your right side.
 Raise your hands to ears the way you do in Takbeer-e-tehrima
(fingers open, palm facing Hajre-e-Aswad) and say

 If you get a chance to kiss the Hajr-e-Aswad, place your hands

on it just like you place your hands when you make Sajdah,
and kiss it. It is Sunnah.
 If it is not possible, then point the palms of your hands
towards Hajre-e-Aswad and kiss them.
12

Start circling around the Holy Kabah

 Hajr-e-Aswad is the starting point of Tawaf. After Istilam, turn
right and start tawaf counter clockwise.
 Start your Tawaf with the Istilamm of Hajr-e-Aswad. It is
Sunnah Muakkidah. (The first and eighth Istilam is Sunnah
Muakkidah.)
 Every time you reach the Hajr-e-Aswad, the starting point of
Tawaf, do Istilaam. (It is not Sunnah Muakkidah.)
 It is sunnah that the males do Ramal (move their shoulders
and walk with quick short steps) in the first three circuits of
Tawaf of Umrah and Tawaf of Arrival.
 You are not required to read any specific dua during Tawaf.
You can do any Zikr or just keep saying ‘the third kalimah’
during Tawaf.

 Make as much duas during tawaf as you can.

 It is sunnah to read this dua while walking between Rukn-e-
Yamani(Yamani Corner) and Hajar-e-Aswad.

Translation: Our Lord! Give us in this world that which is

good and in the Hereafter that which is good, and save us
from the torment of the Fire!
13

 After finishing your seven rounds, you can end your Tawaf
with the Istilamm of Hajr-e-Aswad. It is Sunnah Muakkidah.
(The first and eighth Istilam is Sunnah Muakkidah.)

After Finishing Tawaf

 When you finish your Tawaf, you can cover your both
shoulders. Idhtibaa (opening right shoulder) is done during
Tawaf only.
 Now, come to Multazim (the place between Hajr-e-Aswad and
the door of the Holy Kabah), and if you can’t reach Multazam,
just face it and make duas. The duas made here are eccepted.
 Now pray two Rakaat Wajib-e-Tawaf behind Maqam-e-
Ibrahim. Recite Surah Al-Kafiroon and Surah Ikhlaas in your
prayer. (The males will perform this without covering their
head because of Ihraam)
 Performing these two rakaat behind Maqam-e-Ibrahim is
sunnah.
 Right after performing your two wajib rakaat leave this place
for others who want to perform their wajib-e-tawaf and make
your duas elsewhere.
 If you are not able to pray Wajib-e-Tawaf behind Maqam-e-
Ibrahim, just pray it anywhere in Masjid-e-Haram.
 Now go to the basement of Masjid-e-Haram and drink
ZamZam. (It is Mustahab). Now make this dua

Note: The method of Tawaf mentioned above is for the Tawaf of

Umrah. If you intend to do only Tawaf, you do it without Ihram,
Idhtiba’ and Ramal. And there is no Saee after it.
14

3. Saee between Safa and Marwah

Meaning of Saee
Going between the hills of Safa and Marwah seven times is called
Saee.

How to do Saee
 Being in state of Wudu during Saee is Sunnah.
 Before starting you saee do Istilaam again and say this Dua

 Now come out through Bab-ul-Safaa (it is sunnah). Coming out

through other doors is also permissible.
 Climb al-Safa as high as you can see the holy Kabah and make
intention of Saee in the following words or in any other
language or just make intention in your heart.

Meaning: Oh Allah, I make intention to perform seven

rounds of Sa'ee, between Safaa and Marwah. (Sincerely) for
Allah. Therefore make it easy for me and accept it from me.
 After this recite

 Now look at the Holy Kabah, raise your hands for Dua and
make this Dua
15

 Make some duas because it is the time of acceptance of duas.

 Now proceed towards Marwah reciting the third Kalimah.

 Between the two green pillars, the men will run but the
women will walk on their normal pace. And recite this Dua:

 As soon as you reached Marwah, your one round is complete.

Your second round is from Marwah to Safa.
 On the top of Marwah, do the same as you did when you were
on Safa. i.e. Recite

 Now look at the Holy Kabah, raise your hands for Dua and
make this Dua
16

 Complete your seven rounds of Saee. Your seventh round will

finish at Marwah.
 Now offer two Rakat Nafal in Haram.
 Now you can go out of Masjid-e-Haram with your left foot and
reciting the dua of going out of the Masjid. i.e.

4. Tahallul: Coming out of Ihram by shaving or

trimming the hair

also permitted. Men can get their hair clipped to the length of
the upper third of their finger. Shaving is preferable.
 Women will have a quarter of their hair clipped to the length
of the upper third of their finger. (1.5 inches)
