Dedication Page

The Holy Spirit will come, to establish the glorious reign of

grace, of holiness, of love, of justice and of peace. With His divine
love, He will open the doors of hearts and illuminate all
consciences. Every person will see himself in the burning fire of
divine truth. It will be like a judgement in miniature. And then
Jesus Christ will bring his glorious reign in the world.
(The Mother of God speaks to Fr. Stefano Gobbi on May 22, 1988)

The Bloodied Cross, which you contemplate today in tears, will

be the cause of your greatest happiness, because it will be
transformed into a great bright cross. The bright cross, which will
extend from East to West and will appear in the heavens will be
the sign of the return of Jesus in glory.
(The Mother of God speaks to Fr. Stefano Gobbi on April 1, 1994)

This book is dedicated to all those people who are preparing

Poem of the Man-God Bk. I

Maria Valtorta
She has her fathers features. She has her fathers colour of
complexion and eyes and certainly also his hair. Mary instead, has
not the stateliness of Her mother- - - but she has the kindness of
Her father. (P.25)
The joy of God lacked nothing. God had no need. He is sufficient
in Himself. He has only to contemplate Himself to rejoice, to
nourish Himself, to live, to rest. The whole creation has not
increased by one atom His infinite joy, beauty, life, power. He
made everything for the creature He wanted to place as king in
the work made by Him: that creature is man. (P.28)
Children belong first to God and then to their parents. (P.50)
Because of their (Joachim and Annes) holiness, Anne suffered no
pain in giving birth to her child (P.50)
I made a cradle for you. A tiny little cradle with roses carved all
over it. - - (P.64)
Joseph talking to Mary.
I buried your father, mourning over his death with a sincere
heart. - - - (P.64)
And since only few people pray, those few must pray as if they
are many. (P.99)
It is by means of pain that we achieve peace and every grace for
ourselves and our neighbours.
Our Lady speaking to little John (P.142)
She is the bearer of the Eucharist. She is the living Pyx. Who goes
to Mary finds Me. (P.154)

Matthew did not hear things reported by third parties. He heard

them directly from Marys lips to whom he applied for information,
prompted by love for his Master and the truth. (P.186)
Children, nowadays, are the tyrants of the house. They grow hard,
indifferent, ill mannered towards their parents. They consider
their parents as their servants, their slaves. (P.197)
They are the children of the nurse, of the governess of the
college, if you are rich people. They belong to their companions,
they are the children of the streets, of the schools, if you are poor.
But they are not yours. (P.198)
First of all ask for things for you spirit. The rest will be given to
you in addition. (P.230)
When you pray, be always united to Me. I will pray for you in a
loud voice, drowning your human voices with My voice of ManGod. I will take your prayers in my pierced hands and I will raise
them to the Father. - - - and the purple of My wounds will make
your prayers valuable ones. (P.241)
It is useless to debate with Satan. He would win, because he is
strong in his dialectics. Only God can beat him. (P.252)
He who lays his hand on the plough and looks back to bid farewell
to those who are staying, is not fit for the Kingdom of God. (P.283)
I never refuse My Mother anything. (P.284)
I want to be called the Son of Man because I lower Myself taking
upon myself all the miseries of man. (P.293)
-- And where there are thorns there will be roses (P.307)
Every time you are charitable, God will grant you the grace of
abundance. (P.312)
God does not abandon even the worm he created. (P.327)
We achieve everything by praying. If we do not receive a grace,
which the father does not always grant and we must not think it is
due to lack of love, instead we must believe that it is the will of an
order which governs the destiny of every man for a good purpose.
(P.330)

A loving glance has more power on those who have fallen, than a
curse. (P.452)

into oblivion. God picks them up and counts them. (P.662)
And the germ of man, closed in his Mothers womb, leapt with joy
on hearing the voice of the spouse of God. A precursor also in

An hour that will take place when the end of the world is close at

white as dark, and they decide the white ones are for Matthias,

If there is no fatigue, there is no merit. (P.142)
My instructions are that when they come back, they must not
have one farthing left over and that on their way they must give

despair. (P.541)
I solemnly tell you that, if Hell did not already exist and was not
perfect in its torments, it would have been created even more
dreadful and eternal for Judas, because of all sinners and damned
souls, he is the most damned and the biggest sinner, and
throughout eternity there will be no mitigation of his sentence.
(P.580)
Bless God who has granted you an indisputable proof of my
crucifixion and of the tortures preceding it. - - - The cruel bruises

of my kidney have been the most powerful chemical agent in the

impression on the cloth. (P.669)
The deepest love is in the sharing of sorrow. (P.671)
You speak of evolution as of a sign of your spontaneous
generation. - - - Yes it is so. But in my way. In my field. Not in
yours. Not by passing from the state of quadrumana to that of
men. But passing from the state of men to that of spirits. (P.589)
My eyes see many tonsured people who have nothing sacerdotal
except their tonsures, and they see many laymen in whom the
charity that possesses them and by which they allow themselves
to be consumed is the Oil of Ordination that makes them my
priests, unknown to the world but known to Me, and I bless them.
(P.590)
There is no lack of just people in any country and religion. (P.852)
Assist your brothers who are being purified. - - And I truly tell you
that a prayer for the souls of the dead that they may enter to
peace is a great work of mercy ,for which God will bless you and
the souls for whom you have prayed will be grateful. When at the
resurrection of the bodies, you are all gathered before the Christ
judge, among those whom I will bless, there will be also those
who showed love for their brothers who were being purified. - - many will shine brightly in heaven without having preached,
administered, made apostolic journeys, embraced special states,

tomorrow, much, little, with spices or with ashes. Always as it is
just. God, who is a father, gives it. So it is good. Another time I will
speak to you of the other Bread, which it would be healthy to eat
every day. (P.777)

sorrows. IT is the sorrow that remains - - - (P.832)

So Scribes or doctors of the law arose to teach the people who
spoke the Chaldean language, the heritage of the sore and weary
exile, and thus could no longer understand the Scriptures written
in pure Hebrew. They arose to help the priests, insufficient in
number to fulfil the task of teaching the crowds. - - - Then the
other sect of the Pharisees arose from the transformation of that
of the hasidaens, formed to support the law of Moses - - - by
means of the most rigid morals and the strictest obedience.

(P.464)
- - The sun will be darkened and the moon will shed no more light,
and the stars will fall from the sky - - and the powers of heaven

Men are never so active for their brothers as when they are no
longer among them. (P.942)
The soul - - - has in itself a more noble part the soul of the soul, or
spirit of the spirit - - - The more a creature loves and serves God
with all its strength and power, the more the nobler part of its
spirit increases its capacity to know, to contemplate and
penetrate the eternal truths. (P.943)

(Lazarus) I would suffer ten times as much and die several times,
provided she were saved. (P.23)

have been spread profusely on the dead body, the stench of the
corpse is smelt even at the porch of the house. (P.35)
Gods kindness spares you the knowledge of the future. But I was
not spared it. (P.64)
Three quarters of the village of Bethany, belonged to Lazarus.

An instant, a thousandth of a minute is sufficient for a soul to say
everything to God, to ask to be forgiven and obtain absolution.
(P.226)
After ages of sterile scattered vegetation, it will gather on its old
trunk and will have the appearance of reconstruction. The
dispersed people gathered together at last. Gathered and
forgiven. Yes. God will wait for that hour to end the course of
ages. (P.310)
(Sanhedrin talking to Judas) Annas talking.
Your name will be associated to His forever and your Fatherland
will number you with her valiant men and will honour you with the
highest dignities. A seat among us is ready for you. You will rise
Judas. You will lay down laws for Israel. - - - I swear to you in the
name of my powerful father and of Caiaphas, who is now wearing
the ephod, you will be the greatest man in Israel. (P.381)
--- We love you Judas, the new Maccabee savior of the Fatherland.
(P.382)
--- After everything is finished, with the Christ, Judas shall die.
That is settled.

Everything at the right moment. The Nazarene first, then the man
who betrayed Him. Says Helkai slowly in a dreadful tone.
(P.386)

Words of Christ to St. Faustina

I promise that the soul that will venerate this image will not
perish. I also promise victory over its enemies already here on
earth, especially at the hour of death. I myself will defend it as
my own glory. (58)
the distrust of a chosen soul causes me even greater pain.
(58)
Before the day of Justice arrives, there will be given to people
a sign in the heavens of this sort. All light in the heavens will be
extinguished, and there will be a great darkness over the whole
earth. Then the sign of the cross will be seen in the sky, and
from the openings where the hands and the feet of the Saviour
were nailed will come forth great lights which will light up the
earth for a period of time. This will take place shortly before the
last day. (71)
I do not reward for good results but for patience and hardship
undergone for my sake. (P.72)
It is not for the success of the work, but for the suffering that I
give reward. (P.74)

thrown into a great furnace. Know that you grieve Me much
when you fail to receive Me in Holy Communion. (P.106)
He who does not take advantage of small graces will not
receive great ones. (P.111)

When you say this prayer; with a contrite heart and with faith
on behalf of some sinner, I will give him the grace of
conversion. This is the prayer:
O Blood and Water, which gushed forth from the Heart of Jesus
as a fount of Mercy for us, I trust in You. (P.118)
The two rays denote Blood and Water. The pale ray stands for
the water, which makes souls righteous. The red ray stands for
the Blood which is the life of souls. (P.146-147)
Although my greatness is beyond understanding, I commune
only with those who are little.
I demand of you a
childlike spirit. (P.156)

I sometimes hide from Him, although I know that from Him
nothing can be hidden. (P.165)
My Heart overflows with great mercy for souls, and especially
for poor sinners. (P.167)

structures, but in a pure and humble heart. (P.217)

chosen souls than by the sins of those living in the world.
(P.230)
The greatest works are worthless in My eyes if they are done
out of self will, and often they are not in accord with My will and
merit punishment rather than reward. (P.247)
Your great trust in me forces Me to continuously grant you
graces. (P. 267)

I give great graces to souls who meditate devoutly on My

Passion. (P.270)

Anything, no matter how small it be, that has the seal of
obedience to My representative is pleasing to me and great in
My eyes. (P.322)
My grace is not lost; if the soul for whom it was intended does
not accept it, another soul takes it. (P.344)
I want to grant a complete pardon to souls that will go to
confession and receive Holy Communion on the Feast of My
Mercy. (P.362)
I cannot punish even the greatest sinner if he makes an appeal
to My compassion. (P.369)
In a single moment I will bring you to know more than others

from them the graces I have granted. (P.374)
Your misery does not hinder My mercy. (P.376)
My souls suffered the most dreadful loathing in the Garden of
Olives because of lukewarm souls. They were the reason I cried
out Father, take this cup from me, if it be Your will. (P.387)
-- It pains Me very much when religious souls receive the
Sacrament of love merely out of habit. I go to such with great
reluctance. (P.404)
When I come to a human heart in Holy Communion, My hands
are full of all kinds of graces which I want to give to the soul.
But souls do not even pay any attention to me; they leave Me
to Myself and busy themselves with other things. (P.428)
The loss of each soul plunges Me into mortal sadness. (P.431)

The prayer most pleasing to Me is prayer for the conversion of

sinners. Know My daughter, that this prayer is always heard
and answered. (P.431)
How pleasing to me is living faith! In the Tribunal of Mercy
(Sacrament of Reconciliation) (P.436)
There the greatest miracles take place and are incessantly
repeated. (P.443)

Communions. (P.457)
The greatest obstacles to holiness are discouragement and an
exaggerated anxiety. (P.457)

Life on earth is a struggle indeed, a great struggle for My
kingdom. (P.458)

and then My Father will look upon them with love as if they
were my own. (P.472)

yourself completely in My mercy. In this hour you can obtain

everything for yourself and for others for the asking; it was the
hour of grace for the whole world. (P.480)
Both the sinner and the righteous person have need of My
mercy. Conversion as well as perseverance, is a grace of my
mercy. (P.481)
The more a soul trusts, the more it will receive. - - -I rejoice that
they ask for much, because it is my desire to give much, very
much. On the other hand I am sad when souls ask for little,
when they narrow their hearts. (P.482)

you had done it to Me. (P.538)

Each Holy Communion makes you more capable of communing

with God throughout eternity. (P.548)

Excerpts from the Diary of Sis. Maria Faustina

Kowalska Divine Mercy in My Soul
O Jesus when I consider the great price of your Blood. I rejoice
at its immensity, for one drop alone would have been enough
for the salvation of all sinners. (P.67)
If God wants to keep a soul in darkness, no book, no confessor
can bring it light. (P.70)
The vow of obedience is superior to the first two. (Poverty and
Chastity). It is, to tell the truth a holocaust. (P.78)
---even if he (a religious) were to perform good actions contrary
to obedience, these would be evil and without merit. (P.78)
There is still the trial of trials, the complete abandonment of
the soul by God. (P.81)
--- the soul is engulfed in a horrible night. - - - It feels itself to be
the object of His hatred. - - - all the sufferings and tortures of
the world are as nothing compared with this sensation into
which it has been plunged; namely, that of being rejected by
God. (P.81)
Satan has only as much influence over the Soul as God allows
him. (P.82)
There is nothing little in the spiritual life. (P.87)
I would like to say three words to the soul that is determined to
strive for sanctity and to derive fruit that is to say, benefit from
confession. (P.87-88)
Complete sincerity and openness humility obedience. A
religious who does not keep silence will never attain holiness. I
have seen many souls in the depths of hell for not having kept
their silence. (P.90)

Pure love is capable of great deeds, and is not broken by

difficulty or adversity it perseveres in the toil and drab life of
each day. (P.99)
The soul recognizes that God is counting on it. Difficulties do
not terrify it, they are its daily bread. (P.101)
There is no soul which is not bound to pray, for every single
grace comes to the soul through prayer. (P.102)
The three degrees of Mercy.
The first: the act of mercy of whatever kind.
The Second: the word of mercy. (forgiving and comforting)
The third: prayer. (P.110)
His holiness is so great that all the Powers and Virtues tremble
before Him. The pure spirits veil their faces and lose
themselves in unending adoration, and with one single word
they express the highest form of adoration; that is Holy.
(P.116)
Speak little with people, but a good deal with God. (P.127)
Nothing is as constant as suffering it always faithfully keeps
the soul company. (P.127)
He who wants to learn true humility: that is not only must one
refrain from explaining and defending oneself when reproached
with something, but one should rejoice at the humiliation.
(P.139-140)
Suffering is the greatest treasure on earth, it purifies the soul.
(P.158)
True love is measured by the thermometer of suffering. (P.158)
Zeal for the salvation of souls should burn in our hearts. (P.161)
Our efforts, no matter how great, are not pleasing to God if they
do not bear the seal of obedience. (P.162)
Women are very fond of talking, but the Holy Spirit does not
speak to a soul that is distracted and garrulous. (P.221)
Silence is a sword in the spiritual struggle. A talkative soul will
never attain sanctity. (P.201)

Nothing is better for the soul than humiliations. (P.233)

Holy is indeed of great help to the dying. (P.236)
I understood how much God loves us, how simple He is, though
incomprehensible, and how easy it is to commune with Him,
despite his great majesty. (P.237)
God does not always accept our petitions for the souls we have
in mind, but directs these to other souls. (P.242)
The essence of the virtues is the will of God. He who does the
will of God faithfully, practices all the Virtues. (P.257)
Gods grace must be received just as God sends it, in the way
He wants, and one must receive it in the form under which God
sends it. Faithful submission to the will of God, always and
everywhere, in all events and circumstances of life, gives great
glory to God. (P.268)
Visit to Hell:
Most of the souls there are those who disbelieved that there is
a hell. (P.271)
I must try to exercise the HERIOC VIRTUES. Although exteriorly
a thing might be quite ordinary, it is the different manner [in
which it is carried out] that only the eye of God catches. (P.276)
Pay no attention to human opinion. (P.278)
In the spiritual life, suffering is the thermometer which
measures the love of God in the soul. (P.281)
How terribly Satan hates Gods mercy! (P.289)
Oh how beautiful is the world of the spirit! And so real that by
comparison, the exterior life is just a vain illusion and
powerlessness. (P.309)
Sorrow will not establish itself in a heart that loves the will of
God. (P.310)
Jesus, you have given me to know and understand in what a
souls greatness consists:
Not in great deeds but in great love. (P.310)

In spirit, I saw the Three Divine Persons, but their essence was
One. He is One and One only, but in Three persons; none of
Them is either greater or smaller; there is no difference in
either beauty or sanctity, for They are One Their will is One,
---When One of the Three Persons communicates with a soul, by
the power of that one will, it finds itself united with the Three
Persons. (P.315-316)
I know well, O Lord, that you have no need of our works. (P.336)
Gods presence took hold of me, and at once I saw myself in
Rome, in the Holy Fathers chapel and at the same time I was in
our chapel --- And I took part in the solemn celebration
simultaneously here and in Rome. (P.349)
Together with Him, I underwent, in a special way, all the various
tortures. The world has no idea of all that Jesus suffered. (P.351)
Before every major grace, my soul undergoes a test of
patience. (P.357)
The Lord, so very great though He is, delights in humble souls.
(P.359)
Only love is of any value; love is greatness; Nothing, no works
can compare with a single act of pure love of God. (P.359)
The quintessence of love is sacrifice and suffering. Truth wears
a crown of thorns. (P.361)
Virtue without prudence is not virtue at all. (P.361)
Prudence consists in discretion, rational reflection and
courageous resolution. (P.361)
God never violates our free will. It is up to us whether we want
to receive Gods grace or not. (P.362)
We resemble God most when we forgive our neighbours. God is
Love, Goodness, and Mercy. (P.369)
Souls separated from the world - - - will obtain blessings for
priests, and through their prayers prepare the world for the
final coming of Jesus. (P.372)
Prayer joined to the act of mercy will defend the souls of
children against the spirit of evil. (P.372)

Perform at least one act of mercy a day. (P.372)

I asked the Lord Jesus how He could tolerate so many sins and
crimes and not punish them, the Lord answered me,
I have eternity for punishing--- (P.372)
Satan has admitted to me that I am the object of his hatred.
A thousand souls do me less harm than you do when you
speak of the great mercy of the Almighty One. (P.374)
Poor indeed is a convent where there are no sick sisters. (P.400)
Sometimes more is given when giving nothing, than when
giving much in a rude manner. (P.403)
I asked Jesus why the Angels had been punished as soon as
they had sinned. I heard a voice:
Because of their profound knowledge of God. No person on
earth, even though a great saint, has such knowledge of God as
an Angel has. (P.417)
Nothing can discourage a soul who is holy. (P.418)
--in Your goodness You grant that human beings may fill the
places vacated by the ungrateful angels. (P.419)
O humdrum days, filled with darkness, I look upon you with a
solemn and festive eye. (P.426)
God, in His unfathomable decrees, often allows it to be that
those who have expended most effort in accomplishing some
work do not enjoy its fruits here on earth; God reserves all their
joy for eternity. (P.432)
Practise the three virtues that are dearest to me and most
pleasing to God.
The first is humility.
The second virtue; purity.
The third virtue, Love of God. (P.435)
The Three Divine Persons, whom we shall contemplate for all
eternity and, after millions of years, shall discover that we have
just barely begun our contemplation. (P.441)

Mother Irene: Sister, the works of God proceed slowly, so do

not be in a hurry. (P.441)
The sanctity or fall of each individual soul has an effect upon
the whole Church. (P.449)
Sometimes, more is given when giving nothing, than when
giving much in a rude manner. (P.403)
Humility is nothing but the truth. There is no cringing in true
humility. (P.464)
The Angels are lost in amazement before the mystery of divine
mercy, but cannot comprehend it. (P.474)
As I write this, I hear Satan grinding his teeth. He cannot stand
Gods mercy, and keeps banging things in my cell. (P.483)
The Lord gave me knowledge of the joy of heaven and of the
saints on our arrival there; they love God as the sole object of
their love, but they also have a tender and heartfelt love for us.
It is from the face of God that this joy flows out upon all,
because we see Him face to face. (P.487)
I felt in my soul that after my death I would be able to obtain
more from the Lord Jesus than at the present time. (P.492)
If my soul had known, all at once, what it was going to have to
suffer during its lifetime, it would have died of terror at the very
sight; it would not have touched its lips to the cup of bitterness.
But as it has been given to drink a drop at a time, it has
emptied the cup to the very bottom. (P.504)
If the angels were capable of envy, they would envy us for two
things:
One is the receiving of Holy Communion, and the other is
suffering. (P.547)
Patience always leads to victory. (P.467)

this reason of incredible blasphemy, a third of your inhabitants
shall die of iniquity.
Oct. 14, 1994.

For it is on love than in the end you will be judged and not on your

rises from that land all the way to heaven;

Ask for the grace of compunction. Through the act of compunction
the soul is led into a real metanoia.

The Practice of the Presence of God

The Words of Br. Lawrence to all Christians.
Br. Lawrence of the Resurrection. Born Nicolas Herman in the
French Village of Herimenil in the province of Lorraine in 1611
of poor but pious parents. Military conflict between Lorraine
and a neighbouring German Area. Captured by Germans
Released. Second conflict with Swedish soldiers wounded. He
was employed as a footman to M. William de Fieubet Treasurer
to the King of France.
Louis XIV He attended the
door, table and other duties. 18 yrs combined Military and
service as a footman. His uncle was a Carmelite. He decided to
be a hermit. He was supported by a wealthy gentleman. In
1649 He joined the Discalced (Barefooted) Carmelites in
Paris. Given the name Lawrence of the Resurrection. Assigned
to work in the kitchen. He was a Carmelite for 30 yrs even
though at the start he did not like the work in the kitchen. He
was later assign to purchase wine for the monastery. Again
later He became a cobbler. He was a shoe mender. He had
Pleurisy and was crippled in one leg by his Sciatic gout which
caused him to limp and eventually caused an Ulcer
(25
yrs). His one concern was that he did not suffer enough. He
died on Feb. 21 1691 80 yrs. of age. He foretold the day of his
death. He died without any convulsion. His death was peaceful
and tranquil like the falling asleep.
He was devoted to the Blessed Mother. He had a son like
confidence in her protection. He spent night long watches
before the Blessed Sacrament. If his work was good, he
thanked God. He did the work of two brothers but was never
seen to act in haste. He was sociable with everyone, forthright,

avoided praise and applause. He answered questions concisely

and straight to the point. He contemplated creation. The great
book of the world taught him more than other books. He tried
to write about his spiritual experiences with God but often
found that his writings on the grandeur and goodness of God
were inadequate, so he tore them up. He was often seen with
his face a glow. He feared neither death nor hell, efforts of the
devil (could see him circling his bed) nor the judgements of
God. He felt no need for a spiritual director, but rather for a
confessor. He asked to be a permanent novice. Sometimes he
sang out and leaped like a madman when inflamed with the
love of God. To his physician He said Sir your remedies are
succeeding all too well for my liking. You are only retarding my
happiness.
The following are important spiritual points, he intended for the
instruction of others.
We must establish ourselves in the presence of God by
continually conversing with Him.
We must remain faithful in the dry periods by which God proves
our love for Him.
God gives light for those who truly desire to belong to Him.
Although we might do every possible penance, if your
penances are not done in love, they will not serve to erase a
single sin.
Out trust in God honours Him greatly and causes Him to shower
us with grace.
It is not necessary to have either a keen intellect or great
knowledge to go to God, but simply a heart resolved to apply
itself to Him and for Him, and to love only Him.
Speak to Him every minute, asking Him for His help.
We must not grow weary of doing little things for the love of
God, who looks not on the great size of the work, but on the
love in it.
God has infinite treasures to give us.

Live the rest of your days in Gods holy presence, even if He

judges it fitting to deprive you of all consolations of heaven and
earth for the sake of His love.
Offer Him your heart from time to time during the day in the
midst of your work.
He will come when He feels that it is right, and at a time that
you least expect.
Our only business in this life is to please God. Let us make
amends for lost time. To be acquainted with God one must
think often about Him.
God is often nearer to us in our times of sickness and infirmity
than when we enjoy perfect health. He often allows us sickness
of the body in order to heal those of the soul.
Be content with the state in which God has placed you. We
must unremittingly watch over ourselves so that we will do
nothing say nothing or think nothing that would displease him.
He will give you all at once what He has put off for several
years.
God knows very well what we need, and all He does is for our
good.
Always be ready to receive equally from His hand the sweet
and the bitter.
Love is measured by familiarity. We must always keep our eyes
on God and His glory in all we do, say or undertake.
When we undertake the spiritual life, we will find ourselves
among those whom God chooses to make humble through an
abundance of sufferings and travails, both within and without.
Without this submission of heart and spirit to the will of God,
there can be no devotion or going on to perfection.
Without Him the soul can do nothing.
To practice the presence of God is to take pleasure in and
become accustomed to His Divine Company, speaking humbly
and conversing lovingly in our hearts with Him at all times and
at every moment.

Three kinds of Union Habitual Union: When we are united to

God solely by grace.
Virtual Union: We remain united to Him as long as we continue
our efforts.
Actual Union: Its action can be felt in the soul because the soul
is not asleep. It finds itself powerfully excited. It is something
undefinable,--- an inexpressible tenderness known only to those
who experience it.
Practising the presence of God is the vivid recollection that God
is present with us. --- A silent conversation with God.
We must lead a very pure life.
We have to mortify our senses.
We must leave all created things behind.
Practising the presence of God inspires in the will a disdain of
created things.
Br. Lawrence preferred the Holy Gospels to all other books.
In the way of God, thoughts count very little, love does it all.
It is not necessary to have great things to do. I turn over my
little omelet in the frying pan for the love of God.
He was not eager to go on spiritual retreats because he found in
his ordinary work the same God to love and to adore in the depths
of solitude. He was not at all subject to visions. He never seemed
to have a moment of sorrow. He teaches people engaged in the
world to turn to God. --- even when engaged in recreation.

Words of the Blessed Mother

From the Book To the Priests Our Ladys Beloved
Sons
Locutions given to Fr. Stefano Gobbi of Italy
Soon everything will be plunged in darkness. (P.76)
My Son Jesus does not love you for what you can do, but for
yourself. He loves you just as you are. (P.89)
Nothing is ever renewed or purified without love. (P.99)
Many will have to give their lives and shed their blood. (P.101)
Never look at yourselves. The less beautiful you look to
yourselves the more beautiful you will look to me and my Son
Jesus. (P.126)

Relive Jesus in your life and be a living Gospel. (P.128)

Never become discouraged because of your defects. - - - I look at
your heart, not at your character. (P.136)
There also belong to my cohort the saints of heaven and your
brothers who are still being purified in purgatory, offering to me
their prayers and sufferings. - - - they are still very close to you; - - they are supporting you by their invisible presence, defending
you from evil and protecting you against the many perils in the
midst of which you live. (P.205)
He will come suddenly, and the world will not be ready for his
coming. (P.209)
Signs of the Purification.
1. Confusion in the fields of dogma, liturgy and discipline. There
is spread abroad a most dangerous tendency of wanting to
penetrate and understand everything even mysteries. Any
truth which is not understood by reason is rejected.
2. The Lack of Discipline
Especially among the clergy limiting their prayer to a hurried
celebration of the mass. Being absorbed in excessive
activity; neglecting the Liturgy of the hours; rebellion against
canonical norms; objection to the obligation of sacred
celibacy.
3. Division
Interior division among the faithful. Priests against priests;
bishops against bishops, cardinals against cardinals;
Abandoning the Pope; Proclaiming unity with him openly but
dissenting from him interiorly.
4. Persecution.
Compromising with the spirit of the world. The church can be
put to death with no outcry and without shedding blood. The
collaboration with her Adversary by Priests, bishops and
cardinals. (Free Masons) Honest clergy persecuted by their
confreres.

Till the end of the world, I will always be close to you. (P.226)

These are the hours of battle, and therefore those weapons which
I have prepared especially for you must be made us of:
The consecration to my Immaculate Heart. The frequent recitation
of the Holy Rosary. The practice of the five first Saturdays of the
month in reparation for the offenses committed against my
motherly Heart. (P.233)
Be ever aware of the angels of God who are at your side and
invoke their help and protection often. (P.238)
Live in joy, because your names have already been written in
heaven. (P.248)
Famine, fire and great destruction: this is what the scourge, which
is about to strike humanity will bring you. (P.251)
With my soul I saw, even before He was born, the wounds in his
hands and his little feet, and the horrible gash in the Heart, even
before I felt its beating, I saw Him stretched on the cross - - -.
(P.257-258)
I have imprinted my sign on the forehead of each one of you
- - - and the serpent spewed out a torrent of water from his mouth
at the woman - - - what is this flood of water if not the ensemble
of these new theological theories - - - to take flight from this great
torrent of water, `wings of a great eagle were given to the
woman, and thus she was able to find a place for herself in the
desert. (Rev.12:14) - - - this place, hidden and silent - - is the soul
and the heart of my beloved sons and of all who have
consecrated themselves to my Immaculate Heart. (P.264)
--- But for half a time yet I must remain withdrawn in the desert.
(P.265) (June 29,1980)
My role as true Mother and Co redemptrix will become manifest to
all. (P.267
I am truly the Mediatrix of Grace between you and my Son Jesus - - My task is that of distributing it to all my children, according to
the particular needs of each one, which the Mother is very good
at knowing. (P.269)
Accept as a gift, your fragility. (P.270)
Our Lady speaks about the Philippines:-

I have a great design on this people. They please me with their

simplicity, their devotion, their great poverty, their humility and
patience. (Cebu Oct. 2, 1980) (P.275)
Even in those countries of the most ancient Christian tradition,
the great crime of killing children still in their mothers womb has
gone so far as to be legitimized. This crime cries for vengeance in
the sight of God. (P.276)
The reunion of all Christians in the Catholic church will coincide
with the triumph of my Immaculate Heart in the world. (P.279)
-- Humanity is experiencing the greatest rejection of God in all
history. (P.289)
The attempt to recognize Him only as man continues, the
tendency on the part of many to deny His divinity; to reduce His
divine words to purely human interpretation; to explain all the
miracles in natural terms. - - - (P.294)
The time left to you is short. (P.302) (Sept. 4, 1981)
John Paul II. Shot early in 1981 in St. Peters Square. What he is
now living through has already been foretold him by me.
The easiest victims - - - are the young people whose unhappy lot
it is to be living at this time when the world has become worse
than at the time of the flood. (P.326)
Fight against sin and against compromise with the weapon of
prayer and of suffering. (P.333)
Live in the joy of knowing you are loved by God. (P.341)
Even in your apostolic labours, you are never to seek success and
human approval. (P.344)
--- Carrying ones cross properly - - - the task of daily fidelity to
the duties of ones state in life. (P.344)
In this kingdom my Son Jesus is already arranging a place for each
of you. The angels joyfully await your arrival, and all the saints
pray and burn with love in expectation that all of these places will
one day be forever occupied. (P.360)
Even physically he (Satan) makes attempts upon your life and
personal safety. (P.368)

Prayer possesses a potent force and starts a chain reaction in

good that is far more powerful than any atomic reaction. (P.369)
What I ask for I always obtain, because Jesus can never say no to
what his Mother request of Him. (P.370)
Everything, at any moment, may be changed by the force of your
prayer and your reparative penance. (P.383)
Do not waste time in front of the television. (P.390)
More is obtained through one day of intense prayer than through
years of continuous discussions. (P.409)
The time for projects and discussions is over. (P.416)
Nourish yourselves with the precious food of divine scripture,
above all with the Gospel of Jesus. (P.432)
You are close to the greatest chastisement. (P.445)
The hour of the great battle has already arrived. Fight with the
weapon of the Holy Rosary, and walk along the way of love of
Jesus, of contempt for the world and for yourselves, of humility of
charity, of simplicity, of purity. (P.446)
Every human person must truly be looked upon by you as your
brother. (P.454)
You are in the world, but not of the world. (P.456)
Close to the Son there is always the real presence of the Father
and the real presence of the Holy Spirit; there is always present
the Divine and Most Holy Trinity. - - as in heaven, so also at the
side of every tabernacle, there is the enraptured and joyful
presence of your heavenly Mother. (P.473)
Today, Jesus in the tabernacle is surrounded by much emptiness,
much neglect and much ingratitude. (P.474)
This humanity - - - there is about to fall upon it the greatest
chastisement which the history of mankind has ever known. It is a
chastisement much greater than that of the flood. Fire will fall
from heaven and a great part of humanity will be destroyed. - - the Church must be purified with persecution and with blood.
(P.477)
Only Jesus can bring you to peace. (P.486)

Open your minds to the heavenly voices which, in many ways and
through many signs, are telling you that His return is near. (P.493)
Peace will come after the event of the terrible chastisement.
(P.494)
Flee criticism and grumbling, gossip and malicious speech. (P.504)
Impure acts against nature are sins which cry for vengeance in
the sight of God. (P.513)
The Holy Spirit will come down as fire, but in a manner different
from his first coming; it will be a fire which will burn and transform
everything - - - It will open hearts to a new reality of life and lead
all souls to a fullness of holiness and of grace. (P.520)
I am the mother and the Queen of families. I watch over their life;
I take their problems to heart. I Interest myself not only in their
spiritual good but also in the material good of all their numbers.
(P.521)
Above all I see to the care of your spiritual life. I seek to bring the
souls of those who compose the family to live always in the grace
of God. (P.521)
The most precious good of a family is its children. - - - the children
must be wanted, welcomed and cultivated like the most precious
gems of a family estate. (P.522)
Do not be afraid; there where I enter in, security enters in with
me. Nothing will ever be lacking to you. (P.523)
The coming of the glorious reign of Christ will coincide with the
greatest splendor of the Eucharist. (P.528)
When you go before Him, (in the tabernacle) He sees you: when
you speak to Him, He hears you, when you confide something to
Him, He welcomes into His heart your every word; when you ask
something of Him, He always hears your prayer. (P.528)
---From here my light and my victory will spread and will cover all
the nations of this great continent of Asia. (P.533) (Our Lady
speaking in Seoul, Korea Sept. 27, 1987)
Prepare yourselves with me for the coming of Jesus which is
realized each day in the mystery of His real Eucharistic presence

and under the human clothing of every person whom you meet.
(P.538)
---at the moment when all well be shouting `peace and security
(1 Thess 5:3) suddenly calamity will fall. (P.539)
The Signs of the great tribulation
1. A great apostasy is spreading in every part of the Church.
2. Overturning of nature earthquakes, droughts, floods and
disasters which cause the unforeseen deaths of the
thousands of persons followed by epidemics and incurable
diseases.
3. Continual rumours of wars conflicts and dissention within
countries. - - bloody wars are continuing.
4. Great signs in the sun, on the moon, and in the stars. (P.542)
Television is the idol spoken of in the book of Revelations built to
be adored by all nations of the earth. (P.551)
I am the Mother of you priests, because you were entrusted to me
by Jesus, in a special way, in the person of your brother, John.
(P.555)
I came from heaven to ask you to offer me the five first Saturdays
of the month. I asked this of my daughter, Sister Lucia, when she
was in the convent of Pontevedra on the 10 th of December, 1925. I
asked that this day be spent in a spirit of reparation for the
offenses which are directed at your heavenly Mother. - - To recall
the painful hours, spent by me, during the only day when I
remained without my Son. (P.559)
Do not judge do not criticize; do not condemn. Be kind, gentle and
merciful to everyone. (P.563)
The time of the second Pentecost has come - - - with His divine
love, He will open the doors of hearts and illuminate all
consciences. Every person will see himself in the burning fire of
divine truth. It will be like a judgement in miniature. And then
Jesus Christ will bring his glorious reign in the world. (P.565)
The great eagle is the word of God. - - the two wings (of the
eagle) of faith and of charity. (P.597)
The Huge Red Dragon is Marxist Atheism.

With ten horns - - in order to disobey the ten commandments of

God, and with seven heads - - - the crowned heads indicate the
nations in which atheistic communism is established. - - - Its
colour is Red because it uses wars and blood as instruments of its
numerous conquests. (P.599)
The Beast like a Leopard - - is Freemasonry. The seven heads
indicate the various Masonic lodges. This Black Beast has ten
horns and on the horns, ten crowns which are signs of dominion
and royalty. The horn - - has always been an instrument of
amplification - - -a strong means of communication. (P.601)
The Beast opens his mouth to utter blasphemies against God. - - spreads everywhere black masses and the Satanic cult. - - reduces His name indecorously to the level of a brand name of an
object of sale and of producing sacrilegious films. - - - -it
transforms the Sunday into a weekend, into a day of sports, of
competition and of entertainments. - - - has succeeded in making
abortion legal everywhere, in making euthanasia acceptable. On
every head of the Beast there is written a blasphemous name.
(P.603)
The Beast like a Lamb. (with two horns on its head) - - - indicates
Freemasonary infiltrated into the interior of the church.
Ecclesiastical Freemasonry.
The two horns imitate the bishops mitre fullness of the
Priesthood. The task of ecclesiastical Masonry is to destroy Christ
and his church. Spreads natural and rational interpretations of
divine revelation. Justifies sin. As a consequences there is the
disappearance everywhere of individual confession. Denies the
historical realities of Christ and His miracles and even the
Resurrection. False ecumenism asserting each Christian church
has some part of the truth. It develops a plan of founding a
universal ecumenical church. Attacks devotion to the Eucharist
and the real presence.
Suppresses genuflections, hours of public adoration, lights and
flowers surrounding tabernacles. Subtle and insidious attacks on
the Pope. (P.606 608)
The Number of the Beast 666

Ecclesiastical Masonry goes as far as even building a statue in

honour of the beast and forces all to adore this statue. All who do
not adore the statue are put to death. All who do not receive the
mark of the beast on the right hand and on the forehead cannot
buy or sell. (P.610)
The number of the Beast is 666. It is the number of the Antichrist.
The number 333 indicates the divinity and the mystery of God. He
who wants to put himself above God bears the sign 666. the
name of Lucifer. (P.611)
666 indicated once - - expresses the year 666. In this period of
history, the Antichrist is manifested through the phenomenon of
Islam, which denies the mystery of the Divine Trinity and the
divinity of Our Lord Jesus Christ.
666 indicated twice expresses the year 1332. In this period of
history, the Antichrist is manifested through a radical attack on
the faith in the word of God, through the philosophers who begin
to give exclusive value to science and then to reason. With the
Protestant Revolution, Tradition is rejected as a source of divine
revelation, and only sacred scripture is accepted - - - The
magisterium of the hierarchical church is rejected. Each on is free
to read and understand sacred scripture according to ones
personal interpretation. (Milan June 17, 1989) (P.612)
666 indicated thrice- - - expresses the year 1998. In this period of
history, Free masonry, assisted by its ecclesiastical form will
succeed in its great design - - - setting up a false Christ and a
false church. You have thus arrived at the peak of the purification,
of the great tribulation and of the apostasy.
(P.612613)
The Mark on the Forehead and on the Hand. Signifies the
complete belonging of the person thus marked to the army of him
who is opposed to Christ. The forehead indicates the intellect,
because the mind is the seat of human reason.
The hand expresses human activity, because it is with his hands
that man acts and works.

-He works for himself alone, to accumulate material goods, to

make money his God and he becomes a victim of materialism.
(P.617)
---I also your heavenly leader, am signing with my motherly seal,
all those who have consecrated themselves to my Immaculate
Heart - - - - I am imprinting my seal on your foreheads with the
most holy sign of the Cross of my seal which is the sign of the
Father, of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. (P.618)
About my head is a crown of twelve stars, the twelve stars
represent the twelve tribes of Israel. They also signify the twelve
Apostles - - - also a new reality - - - those who consecrate
themselves to my Immaculate Heart - - - called today the apostles
of the last times - - - (P.626)
At Fatima, I have foretold to you that a time would come when the
true faith would be lost. These are the times. (P.637)
When the Son of Man returns. He will still find the faith on earth in
all those who have consecrated themselves to me. (P.638)
Russia has not been consecrated to me by the Pope together with
all the bishops, and thus she has not received the grace of
conversion. (P.645) (Fatima May 13, 1990)
Open your hearts to hope. The second coming of Christ is near at
hand. (P.664)
It is the Father who arranges for you every minute of your life, as
an expression of His love and of his divine mercy. (P.706)
I will save Latin America. I am the Mother of the second
Evangelization. (P.715)
Announce His death; proclaim His resurrection. (P.723)
Pray to them often. (The Angels)
The cult of veneration and praise offered to the angels of the Lord
must become more widespread and solemnly observed in the
church. (P.734)
What will come to pass is something so very great that it will
exceed anything that has taken place since the beginning of the
world. It will be like a judgement in miniature, and each one will

see his own life and all he has done in the very light of God.
(P.734)
The chain with which the great Dragon is to be bound, is made up
of prayer made with me and by means of me. This prayer is that
of the holy rosary. (P.737)
At the hour of your death, I am close to you, with the splendor of
my glorified body; I receive your souls into my motherly arms, and
I bring them before my son Jesus, for his particular judgement.
(P.741)
An oracle of the Lord In all the land, two thirds of them will be cut
off and perish and one third shall be left. I will pass this third
through fire; I will refine it as silver is refined, test it as gold is
tested.
(Zechariah 13:7-9) (P.743)
The End of Times
Signs: The spread of errors which lead to the loss of faith and to
apostasy. The bloody persecution of those who remain faithful to
Jesus and to his Gospel. The horrible sacrilege - - - the Antichrist
He will enter into the holy temple of God and will sit on his throne
and have himself adored as God. The Lawless One will come by
the power of Satan, with all the force of false miracles and
pretended wonders. He will make use of every kind of wicked
deception, in order to work harm. (P.751) (2 Thess. 2:4, 9-10)
From the moment that the daily sacrifice (Holy Mass) is abolished
and the horrible abomination is set up, there shall be one
thousand two hundred and ninety days. (Dan. 12:9-12) - - people
will hold that the mass is not a sacrifice but only a sacred meal, - - In this abolition of the daily sacrifice consists the horrible
sacrilege accomplished by the AntiChrist which will last about
three and a half years.
Extraordinary phenomena which occur in the skies. (Matt. 24:29)
(Pgs. 750 752)
A special gift of my Immaculate Heart for these times of yours is
the Catechism of the Catholic Church, which my pope has wished
to promulgate, to be his shining last testament. (P.757)
Do not lose courage. Be strong in trust and confidence - - - after
the time of the great trial, there awaits you the time of great

peace, great joy, great holiness, the time of the greatest triumph
of God in your midst. (P.758)
Mortify your senses. Let the tongue be loosened only for words of
wisdom and goodness. (P.770)
Let children come together in cenacles, because their innocent
prayer, united to mine, has today a great power of intercession
and reparation. (P.773)
-- this entire great nation, which is still pagan, will enter and
become part of the flock of which Jesus Christ is the Good
Shepherd. (Oita, Japan, Sept.8,1993) (P.781)
In this very country I have given you an extraordinary sign,
causing copious tears to fall more than a hundred times from the
eyes of one of my statues, - - (Akita, Japan) (P.782)
Fire will come down from heaven, and a great part of humanity
will be destroyed. Those who will survive will envy the dead,
because everywhere there will be desolation, death and ruin.
(P.783)
(message of Akita Japan reconfirmed in Tokyo Sept. 15, 1993)
The glorious reign of Christ will correspond to a general flowering
of holiness and purity of love and justice, of joy and peace. For the
hearts of men will be transformed by the powerful force of the
Holy Spirit, who will pour himself upon them through the miracle
of his second Pentecost. (P.788)
The Eucharist will be the source from which will burst forth all His
divine power. - - (P.789)
To the poor, the Holy Spirit communicates Himself with
inexhaustible abundance. (P.804)
Do not look at your miseries; do not be discouraged by your
weaknesses; do not count your sins; do not go back over your
infidelities; but let yourselves be possessed by His love, because
the divine charity of the Heart of Jesus surpasses infinitely every
human ingratitude. (P.807)

The Way of Perfection

From the Collected works of St. Teresa of Avila
Kevin Kavanaugh O.C.D. et. al.

He has so many enemies and so few friends that these few

friends (must) be good ones. (P.41)
The less there is the more carefree I become. (P.44)
Desire for honour always brings with it some interest in money or
income. (P.45)
It looks very bad my daughters, if large houses are built with
money from the poor. (P.46)
Pay no attention to sufferings that come to an end if through them
some greater service is rendered to Him who endured so many for
us. (P.50)
Prayer and comfortable living are incompatible. (P.53)
- - the practice of these three things helps us to possess inwardly
and outwardly the peace of our Lord - - the first of these is love for
one another; the second is detachment from all created things;
the third is humility which, even though I speak of it last, is the
main practice and embraces all the others. (P.54)
To get used to solitude is a great help for prayer. (P.56)
When we desire love from some person, there is always a kind of
seeking our own benefit or satisfaction. (P.63)
Another very good proof of love is that you strive in household
duties to relieve others of work. (P.70)
Oh, if we religious could understand the great harm that comes
from having too much to do with relatives! How we would flee
them! (P.73)
By relatives I do not mean parents - - - it is right for us to console
them in their need. - - - and so too with brothers and sisters.
(P.74)
A great aid to going against your will is to bear in mind continually
how all is vanity and how quickly everything comes to an end.
(P.76)
True humility - - and the virtue of detachment - - - They are two
inseparable sisters. (P.76)

The first thing we must strive for is to rid ourselves of our love for
our bodies. (P.77)
It seems to me an imperfection, my sisters, to be always
complaining about light illnesses. (P.79)
Abandon yourselves totally to God, come what may. (P.81)
Interior mortification is acquired - - by proceeding gradually, not
giving in to your own will and appetites, even in little things, until
the body is completely surrendered to the spirit. (P.82)
If you wish to take revenge on the devil and free yourself more
quickly from temptation double your willingness to do things that
go contrary to your nature. (P.84)
- - Seldom is there anyone who hasnt done something by which
he has merited hell. (P.86)
The Lord highly favours the one who has real determination. (in
the spiritual life) (P.88)
It calls for great humility to be silent at seeing oneself condemned
without fault. (P.91)
I have never heard anything evil said of me that I dint see it fall
short; for even though I had not failed in the things they accused
me of, I have offended God in many other areas I am happier that
they speak about what is not true of me than the truth. (P.91)
The queen is the piece (in chess) that can carry on the best battle
in this game, and all the other pieces help. Theres no queen like
humility for making the King surrender. (P.94)
- - have a holy daring; for God helps the strong and He shows no
partiality. (P.98)
Not all souls are suited for contemplation, and same reach it late.
(P.98)
- - - Sometimes the Lord comes very late and pays just as well,
and all at once, what he was giving to others in the course of
many years. (P.99)

- - - I dont believe they will be any the worse off in the end but
will be very much the equals of those who receive many delights.
(P.100)
St. Martha was a saint - - - this blessed woman who merited so
often to have Christ Our Lord in her home, give Him food, serve
Him, and eat at table with Him - - - IF she had been enraptured
like the Magdalene there wouldnt have been anyone to give food
to the divine guest. - - -there must be people for every task.
(P.100)
- - - what difference does it make whether we serve in the one
way or the other? (P.101)
- - - true humility is content with what is received. (P.104)
Sometimes one or two men alone can do more when they speak
the truth than many together. (P.120)
If he (Satan) knows that someone is changeable and unstable in
being good and not strongly determined to persevere, he will
keep after him day and night: - - - one who is in a battle he knows
that if he is conquered they wont spare his life. He struggles with
greater determination and wants to fight like a desperado - - - for
him to conquer is to live. (P.127)
He (God) will not abandon you if you do not abandon Him. (P.137)
Where the king is there is his court. - - - wherever God is, there is
heaven. - - However softly we speak, He is near enough to hear
us. - - - look at Him within oneself. (P.140)
- - - Nothing is learned without a little effort. (P.149)
This prayer of Quiet - - is something we cannot procure through
our own efforts. - - The Lord puts it (the soul) at peace by his
presence. - - - The state resembles an interior and exterior swoon;
(P.153)
The will is the one that is captive here. - - It pains them to speak;
in their saying Our Father just once a whole hour passes. (P.154)
- - - we can neither bring it about nor remove it. (P.155)
- - you do much more by saying one word of the Our Father from
time to time then rushing through the entire prayer many times.
(P.159)

Your will, Lord be done in me in every way and manner that you,
my Lord, want. If you want it to be done with trials; strengthen me
and let them come; if with persecutions, illnesses dishonours, and
a lack of lifes necessities, here I am, I will not turn away my
Father. - - (P.163)
Our daily bread - - He is teaching us to set our wills on heavenly
things - - (P.169)
- - The master is obliged to provide his servant with food as long
as the servant is in the house and serves him. (P.170)
Why doubt that miracles will be worked while He is within us and
that he will give what we ask of Him, since He is in our house? His
majesty is not accustomed to paying poorly for His lodging if the
hospitality is good. (P.172)
If we prepare ourselves to receive Him, he never fails to give in
many ways which we do not understand. (P.174)
You see here why the saints were pleased with the wrongs and
persecutions they suffered; they then had something to offer the
Lord when they prayed to Him. (P.177)
- - the souls profit and what the world calls honor can never go
together. Its a frightful thing; the world moves in the opposite
direction. (P.178)
When - - there doesnt arise in the soul a very resolute desire to
pardon any injury however grave it may be and to pardon it in
deed when the occasion arises, do not trust much in that souls
prayer. (P.180)
- - - the trials of contemplatives are great, and so the Lord looks
for contemplatives among people who have been tested. (P.181)
(A contemplative soul) will have fortitude in this virtue of forgiving
others even though it may not have fortitude in other virtues.
(P.182)
He always gives more than what we ask Him. (P.184)
The way the devil can do a great deal of harm, without our
realizing it, is to make us believe we have virtues when we do not.
(P.186)

The truly humble person always walks in doubt about his own
virtues. (P.188)
Now be also on your guard, daughters, against some types of
humility given by the devil in which great disquiet is felt about the
gravity of our sins. - - - even to the point of making one give up
receiving communion and practicing private prayer. (P.189)
Humility does not disturb or disquiet or agitate, however great it
may be; it comes with peace delight and calm. (P.189)
- - the greatest perfection lies in obedience. (P.190)
Love and fear of God: what more could you ask for! (P.192)
- - take care that our speech be edifying; we must flee those
places where conversations are not of God. (P.198)
Meditations on the Song of Songs
We should accept with simplicity whatever the Lord gives us; and
what He doesnt we shouldnt tire ourselves over. (P.216)
Fear - - when some fault you commit does not grieve you. (P.224)
- - - they must give a strict account for the time they keep a
surplus in their coffers while delaying and putting off the poor
who are suffering. (P.225)
What is necessary, daughters, is that we be content with little.
(P.226)
The poor are never honoured very much. (P.227)
Although you think the praise does you no harm, do not trust it.
(P.227)
The flesh is very fond of comfort - - - the body grows fat and the
soul weakens. (P.228)
For love of God, take great care never to grow careless about
venial sin. (P.231)
(true peace of soul)
One sign is contempt for all earthly things
Another, not desiring ones own good.
A third, not rejoicing except with those who love their Lord.
(P.237)

His Majesty enjoys having His works shine forth in weak people,
for in them there is more room for His power to work and fulfill the
desire He has to grant us favours. (P.238)
In the interior of the soul a sweetness is felt so great that the soul
feels clearly the nearness of its Lord. - - - In this prayer - - that I
call quiet because of the calm caused in all the faculties - - - Its
as though there were poured into the marrow of ones bones a
sweet ointment with a powerful fragrance. (P.243)
This experience - - moving a person to shed many tears - - either
by thinking of the Passion of the Lord or of our sins. (P.243)
If trials are not suffered for God, they are worth nothing. (P.246)
- - - the Holy Spirit must be a mediator between the soul and God,
the one who moves it with such ardent desires, for He enkindles it
in a supreme fire. (The Prayer of Union)
- - the Lord is never content with giving us as little as we desire.
(P.257)
- - the more they advance in this kind of prayer and the gifts of
our Lord the more attention they pay to the needs of their
neighbor, especially to the needs of their neighbours souls.
(P.259)
The Interior Castle - Seven dwelling places within the soul
On the eve of Trinity Sunday 1577 God showed her (St. Teresa) - - There was a Most beautiful crystal globe like a castle in which
she saw seven dwelling places, and in the seventh, which was in
the center, the King of Glory dwelt in the greatest splendor. - - The inhabitants received more light the nearer they were to the
center. Outside of the castle, all was darkness, with toads, vipers,
and other poisonous vermin. (P.268)
The gate of entry is prayer. (P.270 278)
- - The first dwelling places Little light - - Too many things entice
and distract souls here and thus prevent them from taking time to
search for the true light.
The second dwelling places the struggle with the forces of evil is
now more keenly felt. - - Conformity to Gods will must be the goal
of ones striving.

The third dwelling places they guard against venial sin, are fond
of periods of recollection and ascetical practices, - - - practice
charity towards their neighbor - - they are good Christians,
tendency to be too easily shocked by the faults of others and
quickly distraught by a little dryness.
The fourth dwelling places. desiring with strong determination to
please God in everything The beginning of the supernatural.
Beginning of passive infused prayer. The will finds rest - - the
intellect continues to move about.
The Lord does not look at the greatness of our works as at the
love with which they are done. (?-278)
- - the door of entry to this castle is prayer and reflection. (P.286)
- - all the good works it (the soul) might do while in mortal sin are
fruitless for the attainment of glory. (P.288)
While we are on this earth nothing is more important to us than
humility. (P.292)
Hardly any of the light coming from the Kings royal chamber
reaches these first dwelling places. - - - it is so involved in worldly
things and so absorbed with its possessions, honour, or business
affairs. (P.294)
- - this Lord desires intensely that we love Him and seek His
company. (P.298)
- His Majesty knows best what is suitable for us. Theres no need
for us to be advising Him about what He should give us. (P.301)
- - it is foolish to think that we will enter heaven without entering
into ourselves, coming to know ourselves - - and begging Him
often for mercy. (P.303)
We are fonder of consolations than we are of the cross. (P.309)
(the third dwelling place) there are many of these souls in the
world. They long not to offend His majesty, - - they are fond of
doing penance and setting aside periods of recollection; they
spend their time well, practicing works of charity towards their
neighbours, they are very balanced in their use of speech and
dress and the governing of their households. (P.306)

- - if humility is lacking we will remain here our whole life (in the
third dwelling places) (P.313)
The fifth dwelling places the prayer of Union
St. Teresa uses an unusual comparison of the silkworm. In this
prayer of Union God himself becomes the dwelling place or
cocoon in which a person dies. Once a soul is indeed dead to
itself and its attachments, it breaks forth from the cocoon
transformed as does a small white butterfly. (P.273)
- - - must walk with special care and attentiveness in the exercise
of virtue and with particular emphasis on love of neighbor,
humility - - - and the faithful performance of ordinary tasks.
(P.274)
The sixth dwelling places There are many extraordinary mystical
phenomena
- Spiritual Betrothal raptures
Courage is necessary - - which must be given by God. This
fortitude comes through many trials both exterior and interior:
opposition from others; praise - - severe illnesses; inner
sufferings, fears and misunderstanding on the part of the
confessor - - - and a feeling of unbearable inner oppression and
even of being rejected by God. (P.274)
The soul may now also begin to receive through intellectual and
imaginative visions understanding about the divine mysteries. - -knowledge of the grandeur of God - - Joy will reach such an
excess that the soul will want to be a herald to the entire world
that all might help it praise the Lord. (P.275)
The seventh dwelling places
Entry - - takes place through an amazing intellectual vision of the
most Blessed Trinity. The grace of spiritual marriage, of perfect
union is bestowed also. - - - the spirit is made one with God. - - like rain that has fallen into a river or of a stream that enter the
sea. (P.277)
The fruit of the spiritual marriage must be good works. (P.278)

Let us look at our own faults and leave aside those of others, for it
is very characteristic of persons with such well ordered lives to be
shocked by everything. (P.315)
Supernatural experiences begin here. (4th Dwelling places) (P.316)
The Lord gives when the desires, as He desires, and to whom He
desires. (P.317)
- - the important thing is not to think much but to love much.
(P.319)
- Consolations - - sometimes mixed with our own passions, they
are the occasion of loud sobbing. (P.322)
Leave the soul in Gods hands, let Him do whatever He wants with
it, with the greatest disinterest about your own benefit as is
possible and the greatest resignation to the will of God. (P.330)
(5th Dwelling Place) A clear sign by which you will be sure against
error or doubts about whether the Union is from God. (P.338) - God so places Himself in the interior of that soul, that when it
returns to itself it can in no way doubt that it was in God and God
was in it. (P.339) Certitude.
Prayer of Union never lasts for as much as a half hour. (P.343)
(the soul sees within itself the desire to praise the Lord; - - - It
soon begins to experience a desire to suffer great trials without its
being able to do otherwise. There are the strongest desires for
penance, for solitude, and that all might know God, and great
pain comes to it when it sees that He is offended. (P.344)
Its attachment to relatives or friends or wealth - - it grieves when
obliged to do what is necessary in this regard - - it has learned
through experience that creatures cannot give it rest. (P.344)
- - love and desire to save souls. (P.347)
We cannot know whether or not we love God - - -but we can know
whether we love our neighbor. (P.351)
If we fail in love of neighbor we are lost. (P.353)
(the devil) There is no enclosure so fenced in that he cannot
enter - - we must always ask God to sustain us - - and we must
never trust in ourselves - - let us walk with great fear. (P.357)

The sixth dwelling places where the soul is now wounded with
love for its spouse he wants the betrothal to take place at a cost
(trials) (P.359)
Gossip, envy, animosity.
Those who were her friends turn away from her. (P.360)
Praise is another trial. Blame does not intimidate the soul but
strengthens it. - - - The Lord is wont also to send it the severest
illnesses. Interior sufferings inexperienced confessor. Seeing
faults in oneself. Incapable of explaining things to its confessors.
Incapable of seeing the truth. The Lord permits the devil to tempt
it. Reading a book in the vernacular but not comprehending its
contents. The soul thinks it has no love of God. Going about with a
gloomy and ill-tempered mien that is externally very noticeable.
(Pgs. 360 365)
There is no remedy in this tempest but to wait for the mercy of
God. (P.364)
It feels that it is wounded in the most exquisite way - - -It knows
clearly that the wound is something precious, and it would never
want to be cured. - - the pain is great, although delightful and
sweet. (P.367)
This delightful pain and it is not pain is not continuous
although sometimes it lasts a long while; at other times it goes
away quickly. (P.368)
There are many kinds of locutions given to the soul. Some seem
to come from outside oneself; others from deep within the interior
part of the soul. (P.370)
Sometimes and often, the locution can be an illusion, - - - the devil
has deceived many by such means, (P.371)
Pay no more attention to those that are not in close conformity
with scripture. The surest signs they are from God - - are these:
the first and truest is the power and authority they bear, - - - it is
left calm and free from distress, with great light - - - fear is taken
away completely. The second sign is the great quiet left in the
soul, the devout and peaceful recollection, the readiness to
engage in the praises of God. - - the third sign is that these words

remain in the memory for a very long time, and some are never
forgotten.
If the locution comes from the imagination there are none of
these signs. (P.374)
Intellectual Vision The locution takes place in such intimate
depths - - the soul seems to hear those words from the Lord
Himself so clearly and so in secret - - that the soul remembers
every syllable. (P.375-376)
- it often refers to things about the future - One kind of rapture - - - when the soul is in this suspension, the
Lord shows it some secrets, things about heaven and imaginative
visions - - these remain so impressed on the memory that they
are never forgotten. (P.380)
In a rapture - - God carries off for Himself the entire soul. (P.382)
He takes away the breath so that even though the other senses
sometimes last a little longer, a person cannot speak at all - - the
hands and body grow cold so that the person doesnt seem to
have any life; (P.384)
Another kind of rapture Flight of the Spirit.
Suddenly a movement of the soul is felt so swift that it seems the
spirit is carried off, and at a fearful speed (P.386) to resist makes
matters worse. As easily as a huge giant snatches up a straw, this
great and powerful Giant of ours carries away the spirit. (P.387)
great courage is necessary, for this favour is something
frightening.
It is such that the spirit truly seems to go forth from the body. - - it is clear that this person is not dead; (P.388)
Within an instant so many things together are taught him - - other
things are represented, especially a multitude of angels with their
Lord.
- - when it again senses that it is within itself, - - it has little
esteem for earthly things - -from then on its life on earth is very
painful, - - (P.389)
Three things, especially, are left in it - -

Knowledge of the grandeur of God.

Self knowledge and humility.
Little esteem for earthly things save for those that can be
used for the service of so great a God.
With the strongest yearnings to die, and this usually with tears, it
begs God to take it from this exile. - - in this dwelling place the
raptures are very common and there is no means to avoid them
even though they may take place in public. (P.391)
The soul wants to flee people and it has great envy of those who
have lived in deserts. (P.392)
- - Our Lord sometimes gives the soul feelings of jubilation and a
strange prayer it does not understand.
- - the joy is so excessive the soul wouldnt want to enjoy it alone
but wants to tell everyone about it. (P.395) nor can he speak of
anything other than the praises of God which proceed from his
joy. (P.396)
The soul doesnt think about the suffering it will undergo on
account of its sins but of how ungrateful it has been to One to
whom it owes so much - - - it weeps over its lack of respect.
(P.397)
- - the memory these souls have of their sins clings like thick mire.
As for the fear of hell, such persons dont have any. That they
might lose God distresses them very much. No relief is afforded
this suffering by the thought that our Lord has already pardoned
and forgotten the sins. (P.398)
Afterwards they cannot engage as before in discursive thought
about the mysteries of the Passion and life of Christ. (P.400)
Since we know the path by which we must please God, which is
that of the commandments and counsels, of His life and death
and of the many things we owe Him. (P.401)
- - the further a soul advances the more it is accompanied by the
good Jesus. - - - the soul will feel Jesus Christ, Our Lord, beside it.
Yet it does not see Him, - (P.405)
- it lasts many days and sometimes more than a year. (P.406)

- this favour bears with it a particular knowledge of God. - - gives

rise to a most tender love for His Majesty - - to surrender oneself
totally to His service. (P.407)
Sometimes also the vision is of some saint. (P.408)
Sometimes (by an imaginative vision He shows it (the soul) clearly
His most Sacred humanity. (P.411)
- this vision always passes quickly. (P.412)
Desire to be given what you have never deserved shows a lack of
humility. - - these favours will never be given to those who desire
them. (P.416)
There are many holy persons who have never received one of
these favours; and others who receive them but are not holy.
(P.417)
Once I was pondering why our Lord is so fond of this virtue of
humility, - - It is because God is supreme Truth; and to be humble
is to walk in truth, (P.420)
- - what happens sometimes to the soul that experiences these
anxious longings, tears, sighs - - a blow is felt from elsewhere the
soul doesnt understand from where or how. The blow comes
often through a sudden thought or word about deaths delay. Or
the soul will feel pierced by a fiery arrow. - - it causes a sharp
wound - - in the very deep and intimate part of the soul, (P.422)
- it leaves the body very disjointed, and during that time the heart
beat is as slow as it would be if a person were about to render his
soul to God. (P.423)
Nor can a remedy be found to remove this pain until the Lord
Himself takes it away, usually by means of a great rapture, or
some vision. (P.425)
The soul is left with greater contempt for the world than before
Two experiences - - put the person in danger of death : - this pain
The other is overwhelming Joy and delight.
- - His Majesty gives strength to the one He sees has need of it.
(P.426)
The seventh dwelling places

When His Majesty is pleased to grant the soul this divine marriage
- - He first brings it into His own dwelling place. He desires that
the favour be different from what it was at other times when He
gave the soul raptures. (P.429)
- - the Most Blessed Trinity, all three persons, through an
intellectual vision is revealed to it - - the soul understands as a
most profound truth that all three persons are one substance and
one power and one knowledge and one God alone.
- Each day this soul becomes more amazed, for these Persons
never seem to leave it anymore in some place very deep within
itself - - it perceives the divine company. (P.430)
In the spiritual marriage - - this secret union takes place in the
very interior center of the soul - - The Lord appears as he
appeared to the apostles without entering through the door. - (P.433)
- the union is like what we have when rain falls from the sky into a
river or fount; all is water, for the rain that fell from heaven
cannot be divided or separated from the water of the river. (P.434)
The passions are now conquered. (P.437)
Effects of this prayer:

Forgetfulness of self.
A great desire to suffer.
A deep interior joy.
A particular love for its persecutors.
A desire to live many years suffering the greatest trials if
through these they can help the Lord to be praised.
Great detachment from everything.
The soul lives with a remembrance and tender love of Our
Lord.
The soul is almost always in quiet. Little or no dryness. (Pgs.
438 441)
All raptures are taken away. (P.442)
Storms pass quickly. (P.443)
Suffer torment in seeing souls go astray. (P.444)

The purpose of this spiritual marriage:

The birth always of good works. (P.446)

Sometimes the devil gives us great desires so that we will avoid
setting ourselves to the task at hand, serving Our Lord in possible
things - - You need not be desiring to benefit the whole world but must
concentrate on those who are in your company. (P.449)

Although we know that the soul is all one - - one understands with
certitude that there is some kind of difference - - between the soul
and the spirit, even though they are both one. So delicate a
division is perceived that sometimes it seems the one functions
differently from the other, and so does the savor the Lord desires
to give seem different. It also seems to me that the soul and the
faculties are not one but different. (P.432)
May the God of Peace make you holy and bring you to perfection.
May you be completely blameless, in spirit, soul and body till the
