Other apps used for First Grade Literacy and Math would be

Phonics silly sentences

This app would align with RFS.1.3.a
Know and apply grade-level phonics and word analysis skills in decoding words
a.) Know the spelling-sound correspondences for common consonant digraph

This app allows the students to play a variety of interactive game like activities that check
the childs understanding of phonics. This app also has sound to it just like the other
literacy app I mentioned above had. In this game students have to do a variety of things
such as match the word of something to a picture, match the sentence up to its
corresponding picture, and dragging the correct vowel to its matching picture.
This app is very easy for the students to use. All they have to do is drag the correct
answers to the appropriate boxes. The directions for the activities are at the top of the
page when the students play the activity.
I think this app is very effective for a first grader because they are still in the beginning
phases of reading and this app tests a variety of skills all at once. I also think this would
be a good review activity at the beginning of class each day to get the students warmed
up.
A potential barrier to this activity would be that a student masters it quickly and they will
need a higher level thinking app to engage in while other students are still learning to
master this one. Unlike other apps this app doesnt have multiple levels for the children
to play so the teacher may want to keep another app in mind for when this one is of no
use anymore.

Math Bug

This app aligns with the standard:

CCSS.Math.Content.1.OA.A.1
Use addition and subtraction within 20 to solve word problems involving situations of
adding to, taking from, putting together, taking apart, and comparing, with unknowns in
all positions, e.g., by using objects, drawings, and equations with a symbol for the
unknown number to represent the problem
This app teaches adding and subtracting by themselves and mixed. There are two levels
to pick from in this game and I think level two would be better for first graders because
its more challenging for them than level one is. There are five levels altogether but after
level two you have purchase the rest. In this game students are solving addition and
subtraction problems by counting the amount of objects there are. For example 10 red
flowers and 8 blue flowers would equal 18 flowers altogether and students have to tap the

correct choice out of three choices. Every time the child selects the correct answer an
apple falls and feeds the math bug.
This game is very easy to follow and not many directions are required because all the
student has to do is solve the problem and pick the correct answer.
I think this game is effective especially for first graders because it helps them with their
basic addition and subtraction facts as well as with higher numbers. I also think it serves
as a good stepping stone when transitioning from smaller numbers to bigger numbers in
math.
Something students might need help with depending on their level of math is help from
the teacher when it comes to the larger two digit numbers, but besides that the app is very
useful and self-explanatory.
