What is an Earthquake?

An earthquake is movement of the ground

caused by a sudden release of energy when
the rocks along a fault move.
Earthquakes occur when rocks that have been
deformed as a result of stress suddenly
shift/move along a fault.
Scientists believe earthquakes are caused by
something called the
ELASTIC REBOUND THEORY

What do you think of when you hear

the term Elastic Rebound?

What is Elastic Rebound?

1. Stress occurs along a

fault and the rocks
try to move but cant
due to friction.
2. Stress builds up,
causing the rocks to
deform (change
shape)
3. When STRESS finally
overcomes the
friction, the rock
shifts/moves.
4. This causes energy to
be released in the
form of an
earthquake.
5. The rock snaps back,
or rebounds, to its
original, undeformed
shape.
