Popularity on social media is validation of

popularity in the real world

Non participation or withdrawal is social suicide

1.

Many teenagers base their self worth on the number of likes,

comments and followers they get
Quantity is important why my friends have more followers? How can I get
more? What is wrong with me? Leads to feelings of depression/rejection

2.

Once you have posted something you cant get it back

Adolescence is a time of exploration one bad move a photo, question or
comment = a backlash. Angst of something they regret being out there

3.

Going viral
Anything inappropriate will spread like wildre but children are under
pressure to be funnier/racier/more daring. Photos & videos

4.

online

Dont deny access to technology: this may

prevent the child from speaking to you about

cyberbullying. They want to use technology
and shouldn't be punished for being a victim!
Discuss the issue & report it to Mrs Nicholls
Save the evidence take screen shots. Do not

Sexting is the use of technology to share personal

sexual content, can be photo, video or text.
Potentially created an indecent image of a child.
By sending this content on to another person, they
have distributed an indecent image of a child.
By receiving content of this kind from another young
person, they are then in possession of an indecent
image of a child.
Reputation damage: sexting content can be
distributed to other users very quickly.
Content posted online can potentially exist forever
Emotional and psychological damage

The internet can be a fantastic place for

children and young people to connect with

their friends, discover new things and be
creative. However, 'friends' made online may
not be who they say they are. This is a dicult
concept for children to understand.
If you suspect this may have happened,
please tell Mrs Nicholls only.
