Re-drafting descriptive writing checklist

Have you remembered to?

 Tried to use alliteration (for example: Big Bob Bites Back)

 Tried to use personification (for example… the heavy clouds

 Used a simile (for example…. The sun was as bright as a

 Used a metaphor (for example….My hair is a stormy sea)

 Described characters and settings using imagery (for example


“The autumn leaves danced around Mina as her freckled arms
glistened in the sun.”

 Checked that you have used a variety of long and short


sentences?

 Have you used adjectives to describe the nouns you have


used? (e.g the filthy, black window smeared with grease.)

 Do all your sentences end with a piece of punctuation? Have


you used exclamation marks and question marks appropriately?

 Is all your speech written out correctly with speech marks and
have you used a piece of punctuation before closing the speech
marks? Is each new speaker on a new line?

 Have you asked someone to check through your work for you?

 Have you described events using all of your senses (e.g –


smell, taste, sight, sound etc…?)

 Have you used a thesaurus to extend your vocabulary?

 Have you used onomatopoeic words (for example…..burst,


bang, hoot, sizzling.)
