knowledge on the United Nations.
1. Explain the meaning of the U.N. emblem.
The U.N. emblem is a symbol for peace and the world map represents all the people and
country in the world.
2. How many countries are members of the U.N. today? ___193___________

3. How might you describe the U.N. General Assembly? What happens when it convenes?
The U.N. deliberate on decisions on important questions especially pertaining peace and
security, admission of new members and budget matters.
4. Does the General Assemblys vote matter? Why or why not?
Yes.. Because it consist of the 193 member states and they are the people that vote on
everything.
5. What is unique about the U.N.s headquarters?
The headquarters are located in New York, USA and the land is considered international
territory, which mean it isnt part of New York.
6. What are the main goals of the U.N.?
The main goals are to keep peace throughout the world, develop allies, help nations work
together to improve the lifestyles, and to be the main group making these goals
achievable.
7. Identify at least two challenges that exist in following the U.N. principles.
One challenge is that America and Russia follow the foreign policy that they want
regardless of what the U.N. says. This is bad because it makes the U.N. weaken. Another
challenge is that most U.N. work is done in the Security Council, not the General
Assembly. Also Russia, America, Britain, France, and China all have the right to veto a
decision of the Security Council.
8. What was the League of Nations, and how does it relate to the U.N.?
It is an international organization that was created to resolve international
disagreements. This relates to the U.N. because they have the same goals and duties
that the U.N. has.
9. In what ways was the League of Nations an example of early globalization? Identify at
least two.

1. They used communication to spread peace so that there wouldnt*t be another world
war.
2. The League of Nations uses Internationalism to create better politics in the world. The
ideal of many internationalists is to go a step further towards democratic globalization by
creating a world government.
10. Why did the League of Nations fail? Identify at least two reasons.
1. People thought that the League was choosing which countries to ally with and which
not to ally with. This was because when Poland invaded Russian land" the League of
Nations did nothing when they were supposed to be keeping peace between countries.
2. When war broke out in 1939, the League closed down4 its head5uarters in Geneva
remained empty throughout the war. This is hurtful because they were also supposed to
be keeping the peace in this situation.

14. Why might the League of Nations be considered the forerunner of the United Nations?
They might be considered this because their main goals were the same as the United
Nations and even though they failed" they set the tracks for the United Nations to come
down the road.
15. What is the U.N.s Security Council, and what countries are involved in it?
The Security Council has primary responsibility for what the U.N. does. There are 18
members and they all come together when needed and determine if there is a threat to
the peace. They decide how to settle it in peaceful ways" but can sometimes resort to
using force. They also recommend new members to the United Nations to the General
Assembly. They elect the judges for the International Court of Justice with the General
Assembly. There are five permanent members; China, France, Russian Federation, the
United Kingdom" and the United States. There are ten non-permanent members elected
for two year terms by the General Assembly (with end of term date): Angola (2016), Chad
(2015), Chile (2015), Jordan (2015) Lithuania (2015), Malaysia (2016), New Zealand (2016),
Nigeria (2015), Spain (2016), Venezuela /Bolivarian -Republic of(2016)
16. Why might the structure and operation of the Security Council be problematic? In other
words, what principle does it appear to violate? Identify two issues.
1. They recommend new members to the General Assembly and that can be problematic
because personal opinion comes into play and if they dont like a certain country, they
wont get in.

2. There are 60 Member States that have never been a member of the Security Council
and they decide if they can participate without a vote and that could be problematic
because it could start a dispute between Member States.
17. Who is the newest U.N. member, and what noteworthy nations are not members of the
U.N.? Why has U.N. membership grown?
South Sudan is the newest member Palestine attempted to gain
membership in 2011/2012, but failed due to lac! of support from the
Security Council. The increase in member states generally reflects the
growth in the number of countries in the world.

They are funded by donations from Member States.

General Assembly

The General Assembly is the main deliberative,


policymaking and representative organ of the United
Nations.Comprising all 193 Member States of the UN, it
provides a uni5ue forum for multilateral discussion of
international issues including peace and security.

Security Council

The functions and powers of the Security Council are to


maintain international peace and security in accordance
with the principles and purposes of the United Nations.

Economic and Social


Council

The Economic and Social Council are under the overall


authority of the General Assembly and they coordinate the
economic and social wor! of the United Nations and the UN
family of organizations.

International Court of
Justice (World Court)

The courts role is to settle, in accordance with


international law, legal disputes submitted to it by States
and to give advisory opinions on legal questions referred to
it by authorized United Nations organs and specialized
agencies. The court is composed of 18 judges, who are
elected for terms of oEce of nine years by the United
Nations General Assembly and the Security Council. )ts

official languages are English and French.


Secretariat

The duties carried out by the Secretariat are as varied as


the problems dealt with by the United Nations. These range
from administering peacekeeping operations to mediating
international disputes" from surveying economic and social
trends and problems to preparing studies on human rights
and sustainable development. Secretariat staff also informs
the worlds communications media about the wor! of the
United Nations4 organize international conferences on
issues of worldwide concern4 and interpret speeches and
translate documents into the Organization's official
languages

Trusteeship Council

The United Nations Trusteeship Council, one of the


principal organs of the United Nations, was established to
help ensure that trust territories were administered in the
best interests of their inhabitants and of international peace
and security.

The current Secretary-General is Ban Ki-moon of South Korea, who tooK office
on January 2007. The Secretary-General shall be the chief administrative
officer of the Organization"but does not dictate his specific obligations.

I feel the U.N. will have a good future because the membership has been gradually
growing since the start up in 1978. They help keep a lot of peace and also bring countries
together. )thin! it has a place in todays world because there are so many problems and
disputes. ) thin!the world should use them more to create peaceful resolutions for all the
arguments. Also,with ISIS being a huge problem" they could help with keeping peace.
What they can do to improve their position is to prove that they can ma!e a change and
that they will actually be helpful to the world.
