What is a barrier?

The concept of barriers

A barricade or a barrier is a physical structure which blocks


or impedes something

Barriers as impediment to communication

Prevents the meeting of the minds of the speaker and the


listener
Barriers are obstacles that the speaker and listener need to
overcome in order to achieve effective communication

Physical barriers
Listeners are effected by their surroundings making it
difficult to catch and understand the message.

Psychological barriers

Mental hangThese are memories triggered by something the speaker might have said
to the listener.

Psychological barriers

Emotional hang-ups
This happens when certain emotions are brought to the
either by something the speaker has said or something
that happened before the
conversation.

May be feelings of:
Extreme happiness

Anger

Frustration

Physiological barriers

Bodily reactions caused by stress


Ex: Under immense stress, a person finds it difficult to
understand a message, thus resulting to communication
distortion.

Uneasiness
Hunger
Headache
Illness

Own meaning of words residing in the context of situation
The receiver is the one who puts meaning to what is said
