Summarize
- Summarizing is a key part of reading
strategically. You need to determine the most
import ideas in a text and then restate the
ideas in your own words in a logical sequence.
Summarizing teaches you to recognize
important information, eliminate unnecessary
information, and rethink what you have read.
Ask yourself What is this passage about?
Answer who, what, where, when, why, and
how?

Genre: Expository Text

- Expository text presents information
that describes or explains a topic. Ideas
in expository text are organized in a
logical manner to best support readers
understanding. May use technical
terms to explain scientific ideas and
may include a flowchart to describe
steps in a process

Vocabulary Strategy:
Context Clues
- Context clues in a text can help you
determine the meanings of unfamiliar
words. When you see an unfamiliar
word, look for words in the rest of the
sentence or the paragraph that make
comparisons or show a relationship
between the unfamiliar word and a
word or idea that is familiar.
-For extra practice, refer to Practice
Workbook page 277. Also refer to
The RWW book p. 417 and the Word
Study Center.

-In expository text, the main idea is the

authors most important thought or point.
However, many times an author may not
state the main idea directly. To determine an
unstated main idea, you should identify key
details in the paragraph, section, or
passage. You should look for examples,
facts, and other information that explains an
idea or topic.
