Name: Amy E Smith

Grade Level: Third Grade

Content Area: Math Number and Operations- Fractions
BASIC PRODUCTIVITY TOOLS: SPREADSHEETS
Basic Productivity Tool Used: Kidspiration 3
Standards Addressed:
MCCK.CC.5 Count to answer how many? questions about as many as 20 things arranged in
a line, a rectangular array, or a circle, or as many as 10 things in a scattered configuration;
given a number from 120, count out that many objects. MCCK.CC.6 Identify whether the
number of objects in one group is greater than, less than, or equal to the number of objects
in another group, e.g., by using matching and counting strategies. MCCK.OA.1 Represent
addition and subtraction with objects, fingers, mental images, drawings, sounds (e.g., claps),
acting out situations, verbal explanations, expressions, or equations. MCCK.MD.1 Describe
measurable attributes of objects, such as length or weight. Describe several measurable
attributes of a single object. MCCK.MD.2 Directly compare two objects with a measurable
attribute in common, to see which object has more of/less of the attribute, and describe
the difference. For example, directly compare the heights of two children and describe one
child as taller/shorter. MCCK.G. 4 Analyze and compare two- and three-dimensional shapes, in
different sizes and orientations, using informal language to describe their similarities,
differences, parts (e.g., number of sides and vertices/corners) and other attributes (e.g.,
having sides of equal length).

Description of how to implement in the class: First, the teacher will show base
ten blocks and explain what a whole is to the class, then the teacher will physically
break the base ten block in half. This visional display will then be demonstration a few
more times with different wholes (meaning not only a base ten). After words, the
teacher will instruct the students that they will get to learn more about fractions at
the computer lab using the Kidspiration Software. The students will be asked to
complete the lesson Almost Half. This is where the students will get to play with the
Fraction Boxes. The fraction boxes represent fractions visually and will be able to
build a denominator as high as a 36. After the students have modeled the fractions
and have completed the two pages, they will be asked to print their worksheets. Any
students who finish early will be able to read the fractions books placed in the
reading center(books listed below). The students will then head back to the
classroom to compare the fractions sizes in a small group learning setting. Once back
in the classroom the students will apply what the learned about the fractions in small
group setting and compare the fraction sizes. They will answer: Group One: What
they noticed about the 1/2 fraction in comparison with another fraction with a
different denominator? Group two: What does equivalent fractions mean and do they
have like or unlike denominators? (Add more groups and questions if neededdepending on classroom understanding)
Each group will present their findings to the class and give a small presentation over
their discoveries. They will use the SmartBoard to draw out explanations.
Level of Technology Implementation (LoTi): LoTi level 3- Infusion. Teacher
directing instruction on problems off Kidspiration 3. Students will use higher order of
thinking to find the halves of different fractions and use cognitive processing in
critical analyze.
This is a digital resource (software) that allows the students to pick different colors
that help keep them entertained while still learning at the same time.
