PHYSICAL CHANGES AT
PUBERTY

HORMONES IN
REPRODUCTION
Testosterone:

Male sex hormone responsible for

physical changes that happen at puberty

Estrogen:

Female sex hormone responsible for

physical changes at puberty. It also helps with egg
maturation

Follicle

Stimulating Hormone (FSH):

Males- Controls sperm production

Females- Stimulates maturing egg in the ovary

Luteinizing

Hormone (LH):

Males- Makes body produce Testosterone

Females- Causes ovulation and makes body produce
progesterone

MALE REPRODUCTIVE
SYSTEM

Testicles: Male reproductive glands where

sperm are made and testosterone is
produced. They hang outside the body in a
sack of skin called the scrotum

Epididymis: A comma shaped tube on the

back of each testicle where sperm are stored.
Sperm gain the ability to swim and become
capable of fertilizing the egg

MALE REPRODUCTIVE SYSTEM

Vas Deferens: An 18 inch long tube that
transports the sperm to the urethra for
ejaculation
3 main glands of the Vas Deferens

Semincal Vesicles- Adds a fluid that provides

sperm with nourishment
2. Cowpers Gland- Adds a clear, oily fluid to
lubricate the urethra
3. Prostrate Gland- Adds a fluid to protect the
sperm inside the female reproductive system

MALE REPRODUCTIVE SYSTEM

FEMALE REPRODUCTIVE SYSTEM

Ovaries: Two main functions

Produce

the hormones Estrogen &

Progesterone
Produce mature egg cells

Fallopian Tubes: Small tubes that carry the

released eggs from the ovary down to the
uterus. The inside of the tube are lined with
cilia push the egg to the uterus

FEMALE REPRODUCTIVE
SYSTEM

Uterus: A hollow, muscular organ shaped

like a pear. The lining of the uterus contains a
rich supply of blood to protect and nourish a
growing fertilized egg

Vagina: A hollow tube about 4-6 inches in

length that leads to the outside of the body.
It is sometimes called the birth canal.

FEMALE REPRODUCTIVE SYSTEM

FEMALE REPRODUCTIVE
SYSTEM

As an egg matures in the ovary, hormone

levels rise causing the lining of the uterus to
thicken

After 12-14 days ovulation occurs and a

mature egg is released from the ovary into
the fallopian tube.

If a fertilized egg doesnt implant into the

uterus lining, the lining breaks down. There is
a discharge of blood and tissue that occurs
between days 21-28 of the menstrual cycle
