Rules
(1) Hiragana (Spelling) Competition
Open to CMI students, MIHS students, and 9th- and 10th-grade COOP students.
Five students per school
MC will read a Hiragana word. The student will write down the word on a piece of paper, and hold it up.
Top three students will get points based on speed and accuracy; best answer earns three points, second best
answer earns two points, and third best answer earns one point. Hiragana words will consist of one to five
hiragana letters. There are five parts; ten questions per part.

(2) The Japan Quiz

Four pairs per school
Paired-up students compete for points through the buzz-in quizzes about Japan. We will use English.
There are five parts; ten questions per part.

(3) Sushi-rolling Competition

Three pairs per school
Paired-up students compete for making sushi. The judges evaluate each students performance; judged
criteria will include:
A) making the roll
B) cutting the roll
C) presentation of the roll
D) cleanliness
E) taste.

(4) My favorite thing about Japan Performance

Four groups per school
Students will perform and show what they like most about Japan. Free style. The examples of this contest
are Japanese dance or cosplay. There is no limit to the number of participants in a group. Performances
must be completed in three minutes.

(5) Singing Competition

Four groups per school
Students will choose and sing a Japanese language song. Students have to prepare and bring the
background music themselves. We recommend students to use simple instruments (like a ukulele) or
prepare karaoke music; playing actual musical instruments is more preferable than karaoke. The limit to the
number of participants in a group is three. Performances must be completed in three minutes.
