Learning Experience: Language Letter recognition and spelling three letter words

Programming Purpose
The purpose of this learning experience is to give the children the opportunity to start spelling
easy three letter words and further recognize their letters in the alphabet. The children will be
given one on one attention and identify letters. They will then be using the letters to spell
words using their knowledge of letter recognition. A few SKs do not know their letter
recognition as well as some JKs so this learning experience is directed towards them.
Objectives:
The children will:
1. Further develop their language skills as they have to use the letters provided to make
small three lettered words. The children will have a sheet in front of them with the
words they need to spell and pick out the appropriate letters.
2. Enhance their cognitive abilities as they identify the different letters based on their
knowledge. Children who do not know what the letter looks like will be introduced to the
letter through repetition and relating it to words they see every day.
3. Further increase their affective abilities as they boost up their self-esteem. Children will
be praised for making a word or trying their best. For many children it will be their first
time making these words.

Role of the Educator

Introduction:
This learning experience will be introduced to the children once they come back from gym.
The table will be set up however; I will call the children that I want to come over first. This is
because I know the children who need to enhance their letter recognition skills and I want to
give them the first oppournity to try it out. Children who are familiar will still be called over
and have a chance to try it as well.
Teaching Strategy #1: Preforming task analysis
This teaching strategy will be used to break down the learning experience for the children so
that they can achieve success. Firstly I will ask the child to show me a letter and probably go
through the letters in their name first. If a child does not know I will draw the letter in the air
and show them what the letter looks like. If they still cannot figure it out I will show write the
letter for them and they will them pick it out. To modify this part I may use a multiple choice
strategy where I give the child three letters and ask them to point out the correct one. Once a
child can point out these letters I will have them start forming the words. The words are all
three letters so it shouldnt be difficult. The children can use the word chart to pick out the
words and form the letter.
Teaching Strategy #2: Challenges
This teaching strategy will be used to challenge those children who are familiar with their
letters. There are many challenges I can pose to these children. One challenge is that I can
take away the word chart and have the children sound out the letters to form the word.
Another is I can give them a four letter word to spell to make it more difficult for them.
Teaching Strategy #3: Questions
This teaching strategy will be used to ask the children questions to gain an understanding of if
they know their letters. Children will be asked can you find the letter ..? or can you point
out the first letter in your name?. This will help to show me what the child knows and where
they need help. I will also ask the children can you spell the word ? when it comes to the
spelling aspect of the learning experience.

Positive Reinforcement Strategies:

I will use positive language when talking with the children and encourage them to try their
best at spelling. The word chart will help assist those children who may need help with
spelling and identifying the letters.
Setting Limits:
There will only be one child at a time at this learning experience because they will need my
full attention. The child will have to keep all the materials and letters at the table.
