SBL PE HEALTH AND SAFETY POLICY 2015

INTRODUCTION

SBL PE HEALTH AND SAFETY POLICY 2015

The principles set out in this document are relevant to all persons involved in the
delivery of physical activity.
Safe practice in physical education should be an integral feature of all aspects of
delivery and across all phases of learning. Wherever staff is referred to in this
document, it includes qualified teachers, trainees, work-experience staff,
volunteers, all support staff, peripatetic employees, AOTTs (coaches and
instructors) and others who are employed in a professional capacity by the
school.
Physical Education and Sport is referred to as PES.
This guidance should be read with reference to the following documents:

PE and Sport Risk Assessments (PE Department Handbook)

PE and Sport Schemes of Learning (Learning resource Cupboard)
afPE Safe Practice in Physical Education & Sport (including updates)
SBL Staff Handbook
SBL policies (safeguarding, Health and Safety) located on school website
HSE Incident reporting in schools
HSE website General teaching requirements for health and safety

BASIC PRINCIPLES
All staff should refer to the afPE handbook pages 14-18 for a comprehensive
explanation of the principles of risk management in relation to Physical
Education and Sport (PES).
An activity is judged to be safe in PES where the risks associated with the activity
are deemed to be acceptably low. It is the responsibility of ALL those who deliver
PES activities to identify those risks and decide whether the level of risk is
acceptable. They should do this through good teaching and management of a
situation on a day to day basis.
All staff have a duty to provide a safe learning environment and safe systems of
work as well as a responsibility to ensure that all young people are educated
about safe practice.
SAFE TEACHING PRINCIPLES
Refer to pages 19-50 in the afPE handbook which sets out the fundamental
principles that all staff delivering PES need to consider and build into their
planning, teaching and provision.
All teachers should consider and apply the following principles relevant and
appropriate to them when providing PES. Not all will be appropriate to any single
situation selection of and emphasis on particular aspects will be appropriate for
a session or series of sessions.
