ACTIVITIES. Before Reading


Read the back cover, and the story introduction on the first page of
the book. They will give you the answer to six of the questions
below. Find the questions, and the answer them.
1.Where did the bombing happen? Outside Parliament in London.
2.What was Alan Cole doing when the bomb went off? He was driving the
Queens coach.
3.Why was Jane Cole in the crowd? Because he was looking for his father.
4.Was the Queen hurt? No, The Queen escapes.
5.How many people were hurt? Forty badly hurt.
6.How badly was Alan Cole hurt? Who loses his leg in the bombing.
7.Who were the five people who died?
8.Which country were the terrorist from? The Irish.
9.What hasn't Alan realized yet?

Can you guess how the story ends? Choose one of these ideas.
Which ending would be the best Justice? Why?
Jane Cole kills the terrorists. Because that Jane Cole can avenge his

Read Chapter 1. Answer the other three questions from Activity 1 in
Before Reading, and the look at these sentences. Are they true(T)
or false(F)? Change the false sentences into true ones.

Read Chapter 2, and then answer these questions.


1.Why did the police arrest the two Irishmen? Because Last week the coach
went to a factory in south London to have new wheels fitted, and
believe the bomb was placed in the coach there. The two Irishmen
worked at this factory, and two days before the bombing, they went on
holiday to Ireland.
2.Why was Alan in the Mews the night before the bombing? Because he to
look at a horse with a bad leg.
3.How long had Alan known Anna? couple of weeks
4.How did Jane feel about her father's new woman friend? Jane felt a bit
angry and did not much like the idea. Her mother wanted too
5.Why had Alan written a letter to Anna? Because maybe Anna is thinking
that he is dead and I wanted to warn her.
6.Why did Jane decide to take letter to Anna?
7. What did Jane find out at 14 Bowater Gardens? That this abandoned and
that Anna had gone to live with her boyfriend
8.What did Jane think when she first saw the woman in her flat? She had the
kind of face that enjoys watching the neighbours and talking about
them.
9.Why did Jane stop fighting? Because they were more strong and more
people.

Before you read Chapter 3, can you guess what the man and the
woman do next? Choose one of these ideas.

Read Chapter 3 and 4. Complete these sentences with the right


names.

What did Anna and Kev say to each other when they met after the
bombing? Put their conversation in the right order, and write in the

6. Anna Your stupid transmitter, Kev! It didnt work!
3. Kev Forget the transmitter. Weve got a new problem. Cole isnt
dead! The other three are, but not Cole.
8. Anna Oh no! Why did it have to be him? Where is he?
1. Kev In hospital. The radio said that hes lost a leg. Bur hell start to
wonder about you soon, wont he?
4. Anna No, he wont, Kev. Hes in love with me.
7. Kev In love? Dont be stupid, Anna! The mans lost a leg. Hell put
two and two together, and hell talk.
10. Anna So how do we stop him? Ah! His daughter Jane!
5. Kev Good! We kidnap her, and tell Cole to keep his mouth shut.

9. Kev Right, lets get moving, Anna!

Here are some extracts from police telephone calls or radio


messages. Choose one suitable word for each gap and then put the
extracts in the right order from the story.
5. Inspector Lee? Were in Jane Coles flat now, and weve just found her
handbag with her flat key in it. Its a bit strange for her to go out
without them, isnt it, sir?
7. Im at the hospital now. Alan Cole is the only survivor who is still
alive but I cant speak to him yet. His leg was very badly hurt and the
doctors have had to cut it him.
4. Weve just heard that a bomb has exploded outside Parliament and
has destroyed the Queens coach Get every man down there at once!
1.Coles changed his story. He now says that his girl friend is one of the
terrorist and that shes kidnap his daughter. Send some men to find
the womans house and the daughters flat Got a pen? Here are the
addresses

6. The guard at the Mews thinks that Cole had his new girl friend with
him that night, but he isnt sure. Cole has said nothing about this
woman. Lets talk to him again.
3. Detective Hall has just been to see Cole again. Cole has repeated that
he was alone in the Mews that night. And he isnt seeing this woman
any more.
2. Were in South Kensington station Just seen a woman with red-brown hair
going down the escalator. Shes in a great hurry. Were going after her...

Perhaps Jane sent a quick email to her brother in Australia to tell


him about the kidnap. Complete her email for her (use many words
as you like).
A lot has happened since you phoned, Philip. When I went back to my
flat, the two terrorists who blow up a bomb, it kidnapped me. The
woman was the girlfriend of our father who had put the bomb. They
said that they will kill me if Dad said anything about her to the
police. In the end I escaped, and both the terrorists died. The man was
killed by gun and the woman was hit by train. Must get back to Dad
now. Ill tell you more later. Love, Jane.
