Smartboard lesson
Content: This lesson will teach students the names of animals in the Spanish language. It will
serve as an introductory lesson to the unity. Students are going to build upon their knowledge of
the Spanish language so that they are able to discuss different animals in Spanish. For future
learning, I can incorporate this vocabulary into different reading, writing, and speaking activities
or assignments to continue building student vocabulary in the target language.
Environment: Students will be able to work with familiar groups of peers during the lesson. The
use of technology will increase student participation and engagement during the lesson so that
they can build upon their vocabulary effectively. This lesson will be taught in a introductory high
school Spanish classroom.
Lesson:
Animals/ High School/ Spanish 1
Performance Objective
Students will be able to name animals in Spanish to enhance their vocabulary in the target
language.
Rationale
Students need to have a wide range of vocabulary in order to communicate effectively with
others in the Spanish language. This unit expand student knowledge of Spanish vocabulary
through teacher guided activities. This follows the Illinois State Learning goal 28.B.1b Imitate
pronunciation, intonation and inflection including sounds unique to the target language. This will
be a focus for students to improve upon throughout the lesson and the unit as a whole.
Assessment Strategy
My strategy will be informal since this is an introductory lesson to the unit. I will have students
play games throughout the lesson to see how well they have retained the information presented
to them.
Accommodations
I will make sure all instructions are given verbally. I will create a written version as well as a
daily schedule for students with a hearing impairment. Students will also be allowed to work in
groups throughout the lesson so that struggling learners can have help from their peers.
Grouping Strategy
Students will be seated in groups and given instruction as a whole. For the activities students will
work in groups to complete them during the lesson.

Materials
Interactive whiteboard in classroom
Students will not need any extra materials for this lesson
Enactment
Hook: Students will be greeted and introduced to the topic; Animal names in Spanish. Students
will be asked if they already know any animal names.
Student Aim: In order to expand our knowledge and vocabulary in the Spanish language, we
will be learning the names of some common animals you interact with in your daily lives. We
will also be learning the names of other animals that you would see in a zoo. This will allow you
to have more things to talk about in the Spanish language.
Development: Using the interactive whiteboard, I will start with a slide that has pictures of
different animals. Students will be asked what that animal is in English and I will tap the picture
to have their Spanish name appear. I will pronounce the word first and have the students repeat
after me to ensure they are using the correct pronunciation. After this slide is completed, I will
have another slide with more animals and go through the same process with the students. Using
vocabulary and grammar from previous lessons, I will ask the students to talk about one of the
animals with a partner (using describing words and any other vocabulary they have at their
disposal). Following this, I will have a game where students will be divided into two teams. Each
team will have a chance to name an animal in Spanish or English that is selected from a die that
is tapped on the board. The team that will answer will be selected by tapping a spinner that will
also be located on the board. The team with the most points will win. After this activity, I will
have a matching game that will list the Spanish and English names of the animals we have been
learning. Students will be asked to come up to the interactive whiteboard and select a name they
would like to math. They will drag the name to the correct spot. After this has been completed, I
will have the activity checked to see how many the students were able to match correctly. This
activity can be repeated as many times as necessary (idealy until the students get all of them
correct).
Culmination: I will wrap up the lesson by a quick review of the animal names we have learned
during the lesson. I will remind the students that this vocabulary will help them expand their
knowledge of the Spanish language and give them more topics to talk about with someone in the
target language. Students can also take the activities we did to other academic areas to help them
review the other material they have learned.
Leap: Before the students leave the room, I will ask them to come up to the board and write the
name of another animal they are interested in learning the name in Spanish. This will be their
exit ticket as well as help us continue into the unit about animals. Students will be invited to look
up the name of their animal or we will try to cover it at some point during the unit.
