Franconias First 20 Days- Primary Reading

*Lessons based on The

Daily 5 and Kathy
Collinss Growing
Readers, ch. 4.

Readers Build Good Habits

We are all readers! We are

going to read so many exciting
things this year! I think youll find
that the best part of being a _nd
grader is that youll get time to
read every day. Imagine that. Not
many jobs have reading time
build in to them every day! To
get to know one another as
readers, I thought we could talk
about our favorite reading
memories; about the times when
reading has felt right for you.

(Ask students to bring in a

special book from home to share
with the class for a week or two.

Who am I as a reader? We all

have tastes as readers, just as
we all have tastes with food. On
your table, you will see a bin
with lots of great, exciting books
from our school library. One way
readers can learn about
themselves is to think about
what kind of books they like.
Today, when you read, notice
what kinds of book youre really
interested in, and after reading
time, well talk about them.

Readers share their special

books. Look at all of these
special books we brought from
home! (Spread out in front of
students in circle.) What are
some things we notice about
ourselves as readers?
(Different kids share favorite
books throughout this week and
explain why they are special to
them.)
Readers have many different
ways to read a book.
#1- Really, really read the
pictures. (Model noticing the
details in the pictures, how to
tell the story of the book through
the picture, how to find what
they think is the most important
picture in the book, how to talk
about the pictures with a
partner.)

Readers have ma
different ways to
read a book.
#2- Tell the story.
(Even if the text is
hard, students can
read familiar pict
books. Demonstrat
with a book youve
already read aloud
show them how to
read it by using t
pictures, the literar
language of the tex
and their sense of

different ways to read a
book.
#3- Re-read a story to notice
details or new things. Just as
we have favorite songs we
sing over and over, we can
read favorite books over
and over, too. (To teach
class to value rereading
familiar books, spend time
celebrating new discoveries

read aloud. Model how you

how readers pay attention to
where books come from so
they put them back in the
right place.
Readers, like runners, set
goals to increase their
stamina. A runner might say to
herself, Today, Ill run a mile. At
first this might be hard, but after
two days of running a mile, that
same runner might change her

#4- Re-read a story in your
best storyteller voice.

Ive been noticing that during

reading time youve been very
busy and focused on your
reading, and thats great. But Ive
noticed one small problem, too.
When youre putting books back
into the baskets, youre putting
them back any which way. Check
out this basket with me. I took it

Introduce Read-and-ThinkWith-Partner
Today is a very exciting day when
you will meet your reading
partner.

Read-and-Think-WithPartner #1 - Introduce the

Book

Read-and-Think-WithPartner #2 Read the Book

You can choose- will we read the
whole book together or just an
important part weve chosen?

Many classes are instituting

a bag-a-book routine.
Each night, students take
one book home from their
book box to read (in
addition to reading other
books for pleasure with their
parents). This is returned
and traded in the next day.

Get to know partner.

Where do you like to read

What do you like to read?
How can we help each
other find great books this
year?
Explain how to sit EEKK to read a
book together.

Today, I want to teach you that

when we get ready to read a book,
we can start to make a movie in
our mind of how the book might
go. We can use the cover, look at
the words and pictures on the first
page, and flip through the pages
to help us make this movie.
We can use this process to
introduce a book to ourself, or we
could do the same to introduce a
book to our partner.

Today, I want to teach you

that reading partners make
sure that our partner does not
get stuck in her book. We do
this by helping our partner
use strategies to get unstuck.
First, we go to the confusing
place, and then we help our
partner try different things
that she has learned that
might help get her out of
trouble.

One of the coolest things
about having a reading

someone to talk with about
your book. Partners have
millions of things to talk
about, but today Im going to

that you can talk about

their books.

#3 Share a Thought/Listen

After a book is finished, we dont

close the book and move on. Toda
want to teach you that readers

One way we can do this is by trying

say how the end of our book and th
title/cover go together. Another way
to think about what we learned from
the book or how it fits into our lives
made us think a little bit differently
about things.

Partners Take Turns

Making Decisions
Its only fair both partners
can make decisions. There is
no boss in a partnership.
Today I want us to think of
ways we can be fair when
deciding which book to read.

Partners solve their own

problems.
(If-Then Problem-Solving
Sheet)
What are some problems that
might arise that keep us from
doing our best work as
readers and as partners?
What are some solutions for
these problems?

Every day, checking in and brainstorming how to improve home/school reading lives.
