ESSENTIAL QUESTIONS and EXPECTED ANSWERS
I.
Why is time important?
a. (it keeps us organized; it tells us when we need to do things;
etc.)
II.
How do we use clocks to tell time?
a. (they show the hours and minutes; each hand tells a different
part; etc)
ASSESSMENT OF PUPIL'S LEARNING:
Pre-Assessment Daily Common Core Review (worksheet)
Post-Assessment Homework 12-1
3 Learning Experience
Introduction (Anticipatory Set) Please put everything away and finish your
morning work it is time to go over it. (Review Daily Common Core Review
worksheet)

Who can remind me how we tell time by the hour? How do we know which
hand to look at?
Input and Modeling: Specify teaching steps and questions/expected answers. We
are going to learn how to tell time using skills we already know, such as
counting my ones, counting by fives, we will even use some of our new
knowledge about fractions to help us name the time.
Who thinks they know which fractions we will be using? (Half;
fourths/quarter)
How do you use time in your daily life? (wake up for school, get on the
bus, lunch time, specials, etc.)
We are going to use some very cool clocks, but we need to respect the
materials. If the materials are used inappropriately you will not be
allowed to use them for the rest of the lesson.
Alana needs to call her friend at 7:15. Can you show me seven fifteen
on your clocks? How do we know where the hands need to go? (big
hand is the minute hand, little hand shows the hour, etc.)
Alana has to get on the bus for school at 7:30. Can you show me 7:30
on your clocks? What number is the minute hand on? (6)
How much time does Alana have to talk to her friend on the phone?
(15 minutes)
There are other ways we can say 7:15 and 7:30. They are quarter past
seven and half past seven. You can also say fifteen minutes after
seven or thirty minutes after seven.
Alana gets to school at 7:45. Can you show me 7:45 on your clocks?
Where is the minute hand now? (9)
You can also say 7:45 differently. It is quarter to eight or fifteen
minutes to 8. Who can tell me the difference between 7:15 and 7:45
and their names? (past/after vs. to)
When the minute hand is before the six we say the minutes past the
hour. When the minutes hand is past the six we say how many minutes
to the next hour. Are there any questions about this?

Now it is time to do the independent practice problems.
Closure When you are finished answering all of the questions please bring
it up to be checked. Make sure that you bring your homework up with you, so
we can tell you which side to do.
