Five-Year Professional Development and Action Plan

Objective 1: to further enhance my supervisory style and mentorship experience


2015 Strategy: obtain a full time position where I am able to supervise
undergraduate students; engage in conversation with my supervisor monthly
about my supervising style and strategies to improve it; read at least 1 new article
or book about advising monthly
2016 Strategy: assess my supervisory style by engaging in dialogue with
colleagues, my supervisor, and allowing my students to give me feedback
quarterly; participate in SUSDA Alumni Mentor Matching; read at least 1 new
article or book about advising monthly
2017 Strategy: continue to supervise students and conduct 1:1 bi-weekly meetings
with student leaders from a holistic lens; give students feedback and receive
feedback from students quarterly; read at least 1 new article or book about
advising monthly
2018 Strategy: participate in national mentorship programs (such as through
NASPA) as a mentor; read at least 1 new article or book about advising monthly
2019 Strategy: expand job functions to include supervising more students and
potentially graduate students or entry level professionals
Objective 2: to become more knowledgeable and intentional about bringing social
justice and multicultural affairs into the forefront of my work
2015 Strategy: engage in conversations about multicultural competency with
students and colleagues bi-weekly; continue to engage in conversations that help
me unpack my privilege
2016 Strategy: create training or workshop for students focused on multicultural
competency annually; engage in systemic conversations about privilege and
oppression with colleagues; make connections about my work and systems of
injustice and verbalize this to my students monthly
2017 Strategy: attend Institute on Social Justice; create blog or journal about
systems of oppression and post weekly
2018 Strategy: join institutional diversity task force and other multicultural
initiatives
2019 Strategy: begin doctoral program that has a social justice lens or will allow
me to enhance this lens
Objective 3: to further my public presentation skills
2015 Strategy: co-present at the 2015 Western Regional Conference with a fellow
new professional
2016 Strategy: co-present at the 2016 NASPA National Conference with a
colleague or student
2017 Strategy: solicit feedback about my presentation style from mentors and
other colleagues; attend workshops or training facilitated by mentors or other
mid-level professionals quarterly

2018 Strategy: develop my own workshop or training and present to RAs, other
student leaders, or for new student orientations
2019 Strategy: present independently at a large national conference; present
during orientation to all incoming students and/ or families

Objective 4: to further grow my professional networks


2015 Strategy: begin my job search process and network with professionals at
TPE and NASPA National; continue to stay involved with the incoming SDA
community through dialogue and being a SUSDA mentor
2016 Strategy: attend a national conference or a local conference in my
functional area; engage in dialogues with other entry level professionals across
the institution monthly
2017 Strategy: dialogue with mid-level professionals about campus climate and
current institutional issues/ trends quarterly
2018 Strategy: reach out to at least five current doctoral students about their
experiences; attend a local conference in my functional area
2019 Strategy: begin doctoral program and connect with other doctorial students
at my institution and within the community; connect with professionals in my
functional area outside of my institution
Objective 5: to continue developing my understanding of student development
theories and best practices
2015 Strategy: submit a NASPA Western Regional Conference proposal grounded
in Student Development theory; complete SDAD 5750 in Summer 2015
2016 Strategy: read at least 1 relevant journal article per week and at least 1 new
applicable book every other month; incorporate student development theory into
all trainings of student staff
2017 Strategy: conduct research in collaboration with other staff and work to
publish a paper on the applications of a student development theory; find a
professional space where I can engage in conversation about theory with
colleagues and other professionals
2018 Strategy: audit at least one Masters or Doctorate level student development
theory course
2019 Strategy: Apply and begin a doctoral program
