CAUSES OF THE WAR OF 1812

France and England attacked American ships.


Cargos were seized and sailors were
impressed.
America stopped trade with France and England
(embargo).
British involvement in Native American
problems led to war talk.
Westerners, called War Hawks, pushed for war.
After Britain blockaded American ports, war
was declared.

The British invaded Washington, DC, burning


the White House and the US Capitol.
The British also attacked nearby Fort
McHenry.
The battle inspired Francis Scott Key to
write the Star-Spangled Banner, which
became our National Anthem.
The final battle was fought at New Orleans.
Although there was no clear winner, America
retained its independence.
