Spains

Latin American colonies began to have


their own revolutions in the 1810s and 1820s.
Spain did not have the resources to stop these
rebellions and lost many of her colonies.
Spain offered to sell Florida to the United
States because Spain could not control the
Native American population.

The Monroe Doctrine (1823)

B. President Monroe gave a speech proclaiming:

The occasion has been judged proper for


asserting, as a principle in which the rights and
interests of the United States are involved, that
the American continents, by the free and
independent condition which they have assumed
and maintain, are henceforth not to be
considered as subjects for future colonization
by any European powers.
