Abstract
1 Einleitung
1 Introduction
The recyclability of a building material is contributing increasingly to its acceptability. This is linked with the saving of primary
materials. The German Research Institute of the Cement Industry
studied recycled aggregates made from crushed used concrete and
examined concrete containing this aggregate within the framework
of a broad scope research programme entitled Recycled building
materials in solid construction initiated by the German Committee for Reinforced Concrete (DAfStb). The main focus was on the
durability of the concrete and the use of concrete crusher sand.
The strength and durability of concrete were influenced only
marginally by recycled aggregate, but the elastic modulus of the
concrete decreased significantly with increasing proportion of
crusher sand and the shrinkage and creep increased. If the rules given in DIN 1045 are to be applied to the design of concrete components even when the concrete contains recycled concrete chippings
and concrete crusher sand then the proportions of these recycled
aggregates in the total concrete aggregate will have to be limited.
bestehen hierfr folgende Mglichkeiten.

given are the higher proportion of hardened cement paste and the
lower elastic modulus of the aggregate. The use of concrete crusher
sand apparently has a detrimental effect.
Some authors [7, 8] give a significantly higher rate of carbonation in concretes made with recycled aggregates compared to concretes with natural aggregates. This is attributed to the higher porosity of the aggregates.
In the investigations listed by Grbl [7] all concretes made
with recycled aggregates have adequate resistance to freeze-thaw.
In their investigations Eickschen and Siebel [6] established that
concretes containing up to 100 % recycled aggregate had adequate
resistance to freeze-thaw with de-icing salt provided the concretes
had adequate air void parameters.
The deformation is significantly greater when recycled aggregates are used [7, 13]. The shrinkage of the new hardened cement
paste is less restricted by the lower elastic modulus of the recycled
aggregate compared to the natural aggregate, and the hardened cement paste adhering to the recycled aggregates can also shrink on
loss of water [7].
3.2 Aim and scope of the investigations
The investigations were intended to clarify how the use of recycled
aggregates affects the fresh concrete properties and the strength,
deformation characteristics and durability of the concrete.
The properties of concrete containing up to 100 % recycled aggregate made from crushed used concrete were investigated, with
particular emphasis on testing the influence of concrete crusher
sand and concrete ultrafines. Only pure crushed concrete was used
in the investigations. Old concrete was produced for this purpose and then recycled aggregates were produced from it after a
few months.
Approximately 40 % concrete crusher sand is produced during
the preparation of crushed concrete. According to the current state

of the art it is not possible to use 100 % of the concrete crusher sand
as aggregate for new concrete so the effect on the properties of fresh
and hardened concrete when cement-fine concrete crusher sand is
used as a constituent of the ultrafines matrix was also investigated.
4 Test procedure
CEM I 32,5 R Portland cement was used for the trials. A CEM II/
A-L 32,5 R Portland limestone cement was used in a supplementary trial. The aggregates used were the recycled particulate materials
Ra and Rb in the size ranges 0/4 mm, 4/8 mm and 8/16 mm and
the natural particulate materials quartz meal 0/0.125 mm, Rhine
sand 0/4 mm, coarse Rhine sand 2/8 mm and Rhine gravel 8/16
mm. A superplasticizer based on melamine sulfonate was used, and
the mixing water was tap water from the drinking water network
of the town of Dsseldorf.
4.2.2 Concrete compositions
The complete aggregate was composed of coarse Rhine sand, concrete crusher sand and concrete chippings (Table 1). The proportion of crusher sand (recycled aggregate 4 mm) in the total sand
content was 0 vol.%, 50 vol.% or 100 vol.%, and of the concrete
chippings was 0 vol.% or 100 vol.%. A grading curve for the aggregate in the central part of the AB 16 grading curve range was chosen for all concretes. The cement content was 320 kg/m3. The water absorption of the recycled aggregates was taken into account,
in the same way as with lightweight concrete, in order to ensure a
constant effective w/c ratio. The extra water needed corresponded
to the water absorption of the aggregate after 10 minutes, which
was determined separately. 0.55 was chosen as the effective w/c ratio. A superplasticizer was used to achieve a uniform KR consistency for all concretes.
The following additional tests were carried out:
1. Use of a CEM II/A-L Portland limestone cement instead of a
CEM I Portland cement
2. Addition of the extra water during the mixing process
3. Use of 0.125/4 mm concrete crusher sand; the ultrafines
< 0.125 mm were screened off beforehand
The mix compositions are listed in Table 1.
4.2.3 Production and storage
The aggregates were pre-wetted in a laboratory mixer with the extra water (water content of the aggregates after 10 minutes wa-

Fresh concrete
The consistency was determined by the flow diameter, the air content and the bulk density in the air void test vessel. The air void
content was determined 10 minutes after mixing and the flow diameter 10 and 60 minutes after mixing.
Hardened concrete
In each case the compressive strength was measured on three cubes
with 150 mm edge length at the ages of 7 and 28 days, and the
tensile splitting strength was measured at 28 days, also on three
cubes.
The distance between the test marks on two opposing sides of
the beams was measured with a stress-probing extensometer to test
the swelling and shrinkage. The initial measurement was carried
out at the age of 1 day, and the other length measurements at the
ages of 3, 4, 7, 14, 28, 56, 85, 119, 182, 208, 301 and 365 days and
then every three months up to 212 years; these were used to calculate the deformation of the beam [2].
In addition to the shrinkage measurements the natural oscillation time of the beams after a pulsed excitation was measured in
order to calculate the dynamic elastic modulus.
In each case the depth of carbonation was measured on two
10 cm x 10 cm x 50 cm beams. At the ages of 28, 91,182, 364 and
730 days an approximately 50 mm thick slice was split from each
of the two beams and the fresh fracture face was sprayed with a 1 %
phenolphthalein solution [2].
The static elastic modus and the stress-strain curve (/ curve)
were tested on two 15 cm diameter x 30 cm cylinders. For this purpose 15 cm long wire strain gauges were glued centrally to two opposing surface lines at right angles to the surface which had been
on top during manufacture. The elastic modulus was determined in
accordance with DIN 1048. The stress-strain curve was measured
at 28 days with a constant rate of deformation of 1 /min.
The gas permeability was measured on two 15 cm diameter x
5 cm discs at the age of 56 days.
The freeze-thaw resistance was determined by the cube method
following the procedure in [2]. Two freeze-thaw cycles were carried out per day. The mass loss was determined after 7, 14, 28, 56
and 100 freeze-thaw cycles. The acoustic transit time, from which
the dynamic elastic modulus [2] was calculated, was determined at
the same times.
4.3 Testing concrete made with concrete crusher sand as a
cement-fine constituent of the ultrafines matrix
To check of the suitability of cement-fine concrete crusher sand as
a constituent of the ultrafines matrix the Ra concrete crusher sand
(0/4 mm) was ground to two different finenesses; the Ra-n fines
were ground to a specific surface area of 3000 cm2/g and the Rah fines to 5800 cm2/g. A CEM I 42,5 R was used as the Portland
cement.
The mixtures of Portland cement and ground, cement-fine concrete crusher sand consisted of 85 wt.% or 75 wt.% CEM I 42,5 R
and 15 wt.% or 25 wt.% concrete crusher sand (Table 2).
4.3.1 Physical and chemical properties of the mixtures of
Portland cement and cement-fine crusher sand
Coarse Rhine sand of the size ranges 0/2 mm, 2/8 mm and 8/16
mm and quartz meal of the 0/0.2 mm size range were used as the

brechsand an.

Brechsand hatte keinen Einfluss (siehe Bild 5).
Elastic modulus
The static elastic modulus of the reference concrete made with
coarse Rhine sand was 28000 N/mm2 after 28 days; that of the
concrete made with 100 % Ra concrete chippings and Rhine sand
was 26000 N/mm2. It was therefore only slightly below that of
the reference concrete and so was still within the range obtained
with concretes made with different coarse Rhine sands. The concrete which contained 100 % Ra concrete chippings and 100 % Ra
concrete crusher sand had a static elastic modulus of only 18000
N/mm2 after 28 days. The reason for the low elastic modulus in
the concretes with high proportions of recycled aggregate was the
higher proportion of hardened cement paste. When the Rb recycled aggregate was used the same trends were found as with the Ra
recycled aggregate. However, the drop in the elastic modulus was
somewhat lower because of the denser hardened cement paste of
the Rb aggregate (see Figure 4).
Ductility
The stress-deformation curve of the concrete made with concrete
chippings and Rhine sand, i.e. without crusher sand, corresponded substantially to that of the reference concrete made with coarse
Rhine sand. The stress-deformation curve of the concrete made
with 100 % recycled aggregate was flatter and exhibited greater deformation (2.8 ) at maximum load than the reference concrete
(2.2 ). The falling branch of the curve for concrete with 100 %
recycled aggregate was flatter. With increasing proportion of recycled aggregate there is a slight increase in ductility, and hence in security against sudden failure through local overstressing, compared
with reference concrete made with coarse Rhine sand.
Carbonation
The progress of carbonation in a concrete is influenced not only by
the porosity of the hardened cement paste but also by that of the
aggregate. On the one hand concrete chippings and crusher sand
are somewhat less impermeable than natural aggregates to penetrating gases; on the other hand the cement paste becomes somewhat denser due to internal curing as a result of the loss of water
from the recycled aggregate during the hardening of the concrete.
Basically, therefore, there was no essential difference between the
depths of carbonation of concrete made with natural aggregate and
that of concrete made with concrete chippings. The crusher sand
also had no influence (see Figure 5). As with the depth of carbona-

used had no detectable influence on the permeability. The specific
permeability coefficients lay between 1.810-17 m2 and 4.810-17 m2

Frostwiderstand

Freeze-thaw resistance
In the freeze-thaw test (cube method) the mass loss of the concrete
made with recycled aggregate was sometimes above and sometimes
below that of the reference concrete made with coarse Rhine sand
(see Figure 6) but the results were so close together that no difference
in freeze-thaw resistance could be deduced even when using 100 %
recycled aggregate. The freeze-thaw resistance of the concretes
made with recycled aggregate was adequate even though almost all
the size ranges of the recycled aggregates investigated failed to fulfil
the requirements in DIN 4226-3 for aggregates with high freezethaw resistance. Further investigations will have to clarify whether
the freeze-thaw test specified in DIN 4226-3 will have to be modified for recycled aggregates. The dynamic elastic modulus was also
determined during the freeze-thaw test in order to detect any possible internal damage to the microstructure. There was no drop in
dynamic elastic modulus in any of the concretes tested with recycled aggregate.
Shrinkage/swelling
After one year the swelling of concretes made with recycled aggregate was in the same range as for the reference concrete made with
coarse Rhine sand (see Figure 7). The reason for the small amount
of swelling is presumably the pre-wetting of the aggregate which
causes this aggregate to swell before the concrete is produced so
that it no longer influences the overall swelling of the concrete. The
shrinkage of concretes made with recycled aggregate was greater
than that of the reference concrete made with coarse Rhine sand after a storage of only a few days in the 20/65 climatic chamber. When
Rhine sand was replaced by concrete crusher sand the shrinkage increased to almost twice the value of the reference concrete (see Figure 8). The shrinkage depends on, among other things, the elastic
modulus of the aggregate, which is lower with recycled aggregates
than with coarse Rhine sand. The shrinkage of the concrete is also
increased by the fact that the recycled aggregate itself shrinks. Figure 8 also shows the influence of the use of 100 % Rb recycled aggregate compared with concrete made with 100 % Ra recycled aggregate. The higher strength and higher elastic modulus of the Rb
aggregate due to the greater strength of the hardened cement paste
resulted in a shrinkage which was about 20 % lower after 2.5 years.
Creep
The concrete chippings, and in particular the concrete crusher sand,
have a considerable influence on the creep of the concrete. An in55

CEM I 32,5 R hergestellten Referenzbetons mit 0,68 mm/m.
crusher sand was therefore almost fully offset by the greater fineness of the Portland cement fraction. It was not possible to establish any essential influence of the fineness of the recycled aggregates on the concrete strength.
The results of the freeze-thaw test did not differ significantly
from one another within the context of the scatter which is unavoidable in freeze-thaw tests. The weight loss of the concretes R2, R3
and R4 containing cement-fine crusher sand lay between 0.5 wt.%
and 1.6 wt.%. The test of the dynamic elastic modulus after the
freeze-thaw test gave no indication of internal damage to the concrete microstructure.
An increase in the proportion of crusher sand had led to greater shrinkage in concretes made with recycled aggregate (see 5.2.2)
so the deformation characteristics of concrete containing cementfine crusher sand was also tested during this test series. Figure 10
shows that after one year the shrinkage of the concretes containing
cement-fine crusher sand lay between 0.62 mm/m and 0.66 mm/m
and was therefore slightly below the deformation of the reference
concrete produced with CEM I 32,5 R cement (0.68 mm/m).
Not only the efficiency of the building material but also the possibility of recycling it will play important roles in the future when a
suitable building material is being selected, as structures and components often cannot be reused. Possible methods of planned demolition should therefore be taken into account even when structures
are being designed. The demolition of buildings and the processing
of the recovered materials must enable the used building materials
to be recovered into their separate constituents.
The influence of concrete chippings and, in particular, of concrete crusher sand on concrete properties was investigated at the
Research Institute of the Cement Industry. Two concretes of differing strength were produced, crushed after a few months, and
processed as recycled aggregate. The use of ground crusher sand as
a constituent of the ultrafines matrix was also investigated. The results can be summarized as follows:
The recycled aggregates from crushed concrete were porous because of the adhering hardened cement paste and had a higher
water absorption than natural aggregate; after 10 minutes this
lay between 9 % and 10 % for concrete crusher sand (0-4 mm)
and between 5 % and 6 % for concrete chippings (4-16 mm).
Concrete chippings do not generally pass the freeze-thaw test
specified in DIN 4226-3.
During the production and placement of concrete made with
concrete chippings and crusher sand the aggregates absorb further water in spite of pre-wetting. For this reason, and because
of the rough surface, increasing quantities of superplasticizer
have to be added with increasing proportion of concrete crusher sand to achieve adequate consistency.
The compressive strength and splitting tensile strength were
not substantially affected by the use of concrete chippings and
crusher sand.
The modulus of elasticity decreased with increasing quantity of
recycled aggregate in the concrete. When using 100 % recycled
aggregate the modulus of elasticity was about 35 % lower than
in a concrete made with coarse Rhine sand.
The shrinkage and creep of the concrete were considerably increased by the use of concrete chippings and, in particular, of
concrete crusher sand. After 2.5 years the shrinkage of concrete
with 100 % recycled aggregate was about 60 % to 100 % higher
than the values for the reference concrete, and the creep was up
to 350 % higher.
The durability of concrete made with recycled aggregate was
roughly comparable with that of concrete made with coarse
Rhine sand. Even when using 100 % recycled aggregate no significant differences from concrete made with coarse Rhine sand
could be detected either in the progress of carbonation or in the
gas permeability. The freeze-thaw resistance of concrete made
with recycled aggregate was also adequate although the concrete chippings did not have adequate freeze-thaw resistance.
However, recycled aggregate particles lying on the surface of
the concrete can possibly lead to pop-outs.
