We Celebrated Andrews 6th Birthday

Happy Birthday Andrew!

And

We Celebrated Peters 6th Birthday

Happy Birthday Peter!

We celebrated Shrove Tuesday and Ash Wednesday.

On Monday, we were saddened to learn of the sudden passing of

Miss Masons Father.

In Language: We began printing the letters in our names. We each have to sign in
every morning now by printing our namebeginning with a capital letter followed
by lower case letters.all sitting where they should on, above or below the line.
Set #4 of the letter tiles were sent home to practice letter names/sounds and
building/reading words. Flip books were sent home for extra letter sound practice.

We continued with the Jolly Phonics program and learned the letter/sound of
SH/sh. We worked in our booklets.
We continued with the unit, LOOK AT ME ! We read poems called What Is in My
Pancakes? and The Best Pancakes Ever!. We used the poems to find rhyming
words and to learn the strategy of filling in the missing word for comprehension.
We did some more work around syllables and identifying beginning and end sounds.
While reading, we discussed what to do if you come to a word you dont know. We
discussed using pictures and then looking at the beginning sound and the ending
sound before sounding the whole word.
We continued our Snuggle Up and Read Program. I would ask that you please
return the books (even the photocopied alphabet books and A to Z readers) AND
the duotangs. If your child has not had their home reading booklets home for a day
or 2, I have discussed with them what I am missing.or it is at home and hasnt
come back to school.
In Miss Masons absence, we continued with the Blue Spruce books and read The

Man With the Violin, a book about Joshua Bell, the world renowned violinist who, as
an experiment, played his violin in a Washington Subway Station and discovered
that NO ONE stopped to listen. The link is

v=hnOPu0_YWhw. The children then had to listen to his music and draw a picture
of what the music LOOKED like.
Dalien the Alien has had successful sleepovers. His parents report from outer
space that they are thrilled with his earth education. This week he learned about
Hide n Go Seek at Martins house and reading at Vanessas.
Gym: We began Gymnastics! We worked on balances, jumps and landings and moving
creatively.
Religion: We learned about Shrove Tuesday or FAT Tuesday! We discussed this
as a day historically where we rid ourselves of the fat in our cupboards so we may
prepare for Easter beginning on Ash Wednesday. We had waffles to celebrate. We
discussed Ash Wednesday. We looked at Palms from last Palm Sunday and
discussed ashes. We used a SmartBoard presentation to practice putting ashes

on our foreheads. As Martin was our Star, we put a cross on Martins forehead and
then asked him if it hurt. It was a fun lesson that decreased any apprehension of
ashes! We celebrated Ash Wednesday as a School Community in the Gym. Once
again, we were EXTREMELY well behaved and respectful.
We discussed Lent as the 40 days to prepare for the miracle of Easter. We
learned of Jesus 40 days in the desert. Miss Evans has created a Lenten Pathway
on the wall. Every day, we will discuss the pathway and where we are in our journey.
Also, like a caterpillar, we are slowly transforming ourselves. We will Be the Best
That We Can Be !!!! For the next 40 days, we will fill our hearts with love by doing
Good Deeds. We have a heart-shaped puzzle of deeds in the class. This week, we
are working on saying Please and Thank You and using ONLY kind words.
We also talked briefly about Miss Masons absence. Even the children noticed the
deafening silence in the Library this week! I told them Miss Masons dad went to
Heaven and while she is happy about that, she is very sad that she cant watch
hockey with him on the weekend and that she will miss him. The children
immediately wanted to make cardsso we did!
Science : Miss Evans read The Very Hungry Caterpillar and discussed the
transformation of a caterpillar to a butterfly.
In Art: In keeping with the book, The Man With the Violin, Miss Evans had the
children listen to music and then paint what they felt.
In Music, Drama and Dance: Next week, we will resume our Lip Sync work!
In Mathematics: We were counting machines this week! We did work with the 100
chart. We listened to songs and danced dances while counting by 1,2,5, and 10. We
were each given a number and we had to find and count that many objects. We also
made plasticine numbers from 1 to 18. We will use these to make our own number
video.
In Personal and Social Development: We worked a lot on remembering that our
actions affect others. There was also a big connection with lent this week as we
walk down the Lenten Path towards Easter we want to transform and be the BEST
versions of ourselves!

In Inquiry/Directed Play: There was LOTS of drawing and creating spaceships

this week. The big blocks were popular and was playing school!
