Lesson: Reflexive Verbs

Materials: White board, bowl, small pieces of paper, PowerPoint presentation.

Objectives:
Intermediate level students are able to do the following:
1. Use reflexive pronouns and subjective pronouns in the same
sentence.
2. Understand the grammatical structure reflexive verb statements.

Anticipated problems for Teacher:


1. T may have a problem playing music in class because of being in a country
where music is not allowed.
Solution: Teacher will tap the table to create a sound that the Ss can move to.
Anticipated problems for Students:
1. Ss may have problems forming reflexive verb statements because reflexive
verbs are not used for things that individuals usually do for themselves. It has to
be something happening not occasionally but only sometimes.
Solution: T will break down the structure of reflexive verb statements into an
orderly chart to help Ss understand the rarity of each statement.

Teacher Activity
T will write two headings on the board and write down subjective on one side and objective on the other side.
T will write down a list of pronouns for both categories.

T will ask Ss to match the reflexive pronouns with their respective subjective pronouns.
T will elicit the answers from the Ss.
T will play a musical chair game with Ss. Teacher will tap the table and Ss will walk around the chairs. As soon as T will
stop tapping, Ss will be required to find an empty chair to sit in. If Ss do not find an empty chair and remain standing, then
they will have to pick out a paper from a bowl. The bowl will have pieces of small paper with reflexive pronoun or

subjective pronoun written on it. Ss will then create a sentence based on the type of pronoun they will pick out.

T will monitor the Ss throughout the game.


T will introduce the Ss to the reflexive verb grammar by writing the definition on the white board.
Reflexive verb: A reflexive verb is created when the subject and object are the same.
T will present a PowerPoint slide to help with the structure of a reflexive verb.
