OD Section Set-Up
Rebuild Tip: Setting the OD clearance the way the assembly manuals describe
is fine but involves several measurements and math calculations.

Here is a fast easy way using drill bits you probably have.
1 Assemble entire OD section except for the round wire snap ring on top of OD clutches.
2 Stick the OD shim on the OD piston with a thin layer of grease. Place the large bearing on
top of the direct clutch sliding hub as well.
3 Place the piston in position so the shim on the piston is against the bearing on top of the
sliding hub, just like it will end up when assembled.
4 Using drill bits as feeler gauges, measure between the top OD steel plate and the OD
apply piston while hold slight pressure downward on OD piston with your hand. Target
is .095-.110. Install a thicker or thinner shim to achieve this clearance. Remember that
as the plates wear, the clearance here will increase.
5 Once correct clearance is obtained, install wire top ring and finish assembly.

Use a drill bit as a feeler gauge

between the piston and top steel
plate to measure clearance.
Install thicker/thinner selective
shim to obtain .095-.110.
