Abstract The dosign of highly COs salective membranes by
ncorporating low arrounts (0.25-0.75 wt%) of functionalized
graphene oxide (F-GO)nanosheets (polyethylene glycol func
tionalized and aminated GOs) into an Uktem® 1000
polyetherimide (PE is presented, Structural and morpholog~
ical analysis of the mombranes by infrared spectroscopy, X-
‘ay difraction, differential scanning calormmety and scanning
election microscopy revealed strong interfacial interactions
bewvcen the F-GO nanosheets and PEL, The COxCHy separ
ration performance ofthe membranes was discussed in tems
of filler polymer interfacial nteractonsand fe volume char-
actersties. The origins of fee volume are proposed to be
different for GOIPE and F-GO/PEL membranes: ee volume

membranes while distributed within interphase rexions
fomed around the F-GO nanoshoots in the F-GOPPEI once
‘These diffewent free volume localizations resulted indistinct,

containing aminated-GO showed outstanding CO2/CHg Sle
tivities up to 142, due to the activation of multi-
pomscletivity mechanism in the PEI membrane by adltion

In recent yeas, carbon dioxide (COs) asorption and separa-
tion have gained great attention becasss of progressive
increasing CO» emissions associated with Fosil uel combus=
tion, biomass enenty faites, or natural gas processing (1)
Conventional COp separation processes employed worldwide
a eryogent distilation, pressure (and vacuum) swing ad-
‘sorption and chemical adsortion of CO. by amine solutions
such as monoethanolamine (MEA) (2), Compared wih these
rrocessts the use of polymeric membranes for COs separae
tion purposcs is receiving inceasing attention due to small
footprint, mechanical simplicity, low cost ad erviconmental
pollution and generally ease of operation [3, d]. The most
significant challenge inthe gas separation field is design and
fabvicaton of materials with outsianling gas separation sclec-
tivity [5 6], Pemsclesivity of membranes fer CO, separation
is usually dived into difusivity-selectivity (separation of
ponetrants according to their relative size), solubi
‘Selectivity (separation of penetants according Wo their reative
condensabilty) and reactivity-selectvity (separation of pene-
‘vans Uxough reversible teastions besween COs and reactive
cariersin the membrane) [7]. However, most of the commer-
ally availble polymer membranes separate penetranis ae
cording only oneor the above mechanisms and therefore do
‘ot meet the fll requirements of COs cape (8, 6}, Recently
