Biology 11, Period 2
Squid Dissection Pre-Lab

Lesson Purpose:
This lesson is designed to introduce the concept of dissection and the
appropriate protocol to the students. It is also designed to present the students
with a general background knowledge and understanding on the squid as an
invertebrate animal in preparation to understand tomorrows dissection.
Student Outcomes:
Use organisms found in a local or regional ecosystem to demonstrate an
understanding of fundamental principles of taxonomy. (316-5)
Describe the anatomy and physiology of a representative organism from each
kingdom, including a representative virus. (316-6)
Analyze and explain the life cycle of a representative organism from each
kingdom, including a representative virus. (313-1)
Authentic Student Assessment:
Following the end of the period, I will collect a pre-lab from each student to
provide only formative assessment in the form of written feedback. I am
assessing to see that students are on track and completing work to the best of
their ability in the time given.
Prior Knowledge:
Students may have some familiarity with the squid and ecology from Science 10
or Oceans 11.
However, these students have not yet had a dissection in school.
Lesson:
I will be discussing with students our plan for the rest of the week, and
introducing that we will be beginning to dissect the squid.
Go over the appropriate procedure and rules to follow during a dissection.
What protocols must we follow to ensure we dissect in a humane and attentive
manner which adheres with the safety conduct by the school and school board?
Discuss: Cell phone use, group selection, what tomorrow will be like, drawing
diagrams, clean up mode, asking questions when appropriate.
Following this, I will allow students to ask questions if they have any.
I will also mention the option of Frog Guts to do this lab virtually for students
who are against dissection.
Students will be working towards completing a Pre-Lab Report which familiarizes
them with the squid. Students can work in their lab groups, in partners, or

individually to research using the 2 articles given, as well as the internet (ipad
cart) to find what they feel are the best answers to the questions.
At the end of class, students will pass in what they have completed for feedback
only. I will also be verifying to ensure they have appropriate group members.

Materials:
SMARTBoard
Computer
Projector
Class Set of Pre-Lab handouts
Ipad Cart
Closure:
I will have students return the ipads to the cart and sign out, while plugging them
into the chargers.
Students will pass in whatever work they have completed.
I will ask students about grouping and if anyone has any issues with the group
they have selected so far.
I will address any questions students may have about tomorrows dissection.
Professional Growth Target:
Ensure that students are using the ipads for the appropriate purpose.
