Agency Memo

The Salvation Army is an organization that many people hear about, this is because
they are so active with their work throughout the whole world. They are responsible
for helping out many tragedies and natural disasters. They are mainly run by
volunteers that give their time or any type of donations that they can provide during
these times of need. This agency can also be used to understand the use of a
discourse community, especially since it is a very large corporation. Despite all the
things they do the Salvation Army would not run smoothly if the discourse
community did not communicate properly.
The communication flow begins at the head of the army coming from
Commissioners David and Barbara Jeffrey. These are usually the first people to give
word out on new projects that they are seeking to participate in. Under the
commissioners are the Officers and National Advisory Board, both of these groups
have input in what plans will proceed. These three groups of people are responsible
for making sure that other members of the Salvation Army and volunteers hear the
newest message as soon as it is received so help can be sent on the way. Most
volunteers have emails that are sent to them because it is easy to reach former
volunteers, but advertisement in many different areas is used to gain attention from
everyone in the world.
The documents/advertisements that are sent out more than likely pertain to current
situations that need help. For example they were there to help during the massive
earthquake that devastated Haiti in 2010, this was one of the biggest events for the
army in the past years. Yet so much help was given and is still being given this day
due to the communication and connections from Haiti to the states and the
Salvation Army. The Salvation Army ensures that their message will get to as many
people that are able to help out because they need as much help as they can
possibly obtain.
The Salvation Army has a really good system set up to communicate throughout the
world to make sure that anyone and everyone that can help receives the message.
There are times in which some people are not able to get these messages because
they do not have the resources available, this is a great disadvantage because any
help is appreciated. On the other hand their communication is the reason for so
many saved lives throughout years and many disasters. If the Salvation Army
continues to run their operations as they have they will continue to be successful.
In conclusion, the Salvation Army practices using a discourse community of many
different people to provide help in events of tragedies and natural disasters. They
have set up a system in which they can reach all their former volunteers through
direct contact and they can always accept more volunteers that see their
advertisement. This agency shows how a well put together discourse community
can contribute to the world.
