MITOSIS

Draw the phases of

mitosis in your journal.
Color the drawings.
Make sure you copy the
information on each
phase.

When a cell grows too large for the

nucleus to control or when there is
injury to the body, a cell will divide.
This is mitosis.
Before a cell divides, it must first
copy its DNA. The DNA ladder
unzips and each side is used to make
the other side.

There are 5 phases to mitosis:

Interphase
Prophase
Metaphase
Anaphase
Telophase

Interphase:
They thought the cell was
resting because they couldnt
see anything happening.
Actually it is during this phase
that the DNA copies itself. This
is called a mother cell.

Interphase

Cell membrane

Nuclear membrane

Chromatin

This is the mother cell.

Prophase:
The nuclear membrane dissolves,
the chromosomes become visible as
dark threads, spindle fibers start to
grow.

Centrioles
Spindle fibers

Metaphase:
The chromosomes move to the
center of the cell. The spindle
fibers grow until they meet a
chromosome and attach to it.

Anaphase:
The spindle fibers shorten and pull
the chromosome pairs apart. Each
copy of a chromosome pair goes to
a different side of the cell.

Telophase:
The chromosomes bunch up at the
ends of the cell. The nuclear
membrane reforms. The spindle
fibers disappear. The cell starts to
divide its cytoplasm in the center to
form two daughter cells.

Cleavage furrow

These are daughter cells.

The DNA of the daughter cells is

identical. The DNA of each
daughter cell is identical to the
DNA of the mother cell that they
came from.

The plant cell undergoes the same

phases as an animal cell.
The major difference is that when
the animal cell divides, it divides
from the inside out.
When the plant cell divides, it
starts a cell wall in the center of
the cell that grows outward.
