Lesson Plan Title: Mini Lesson #3 Manipulative Strategies

Honorio Gonzalez

ELD Objectives:

ELA Language Standards for Grade Level

For the students to be able to use

manipulative which are concrete devices
that students can move and handle to
support their thinking and learning (Herrell &
Jordan, 2012).
ELD Language: English

2nd Grade- In second grade, fluency, comprehension,

and analysis are the focus of reading instruction for the
students. The students will apply their knowledge of the
basic features of reading to achieve fluency in oral and
silent reading. Furthermore, in the second grade,
students will learn more sophisticated strategies to
analyze literature.

The students will use

manipulatives to support their thinking and
learning in the following lesson.

Strategies (provide text
chapters/reference)

The use of manipulatives,

whether they are real objects
that help students to relate
to language to concepts or
representational objects such
as block, counters, or beans,
are often supportive to
students understanding and
language development
(Herrell & Jordan, 2012, p.
72).

All strategies will be research based and from one of the texts. Please provide reference for each.
Motivation strategy:

Direct Method, Natural Approach, Communicative Language Teaching

(Horwitz, 2013).
(Building Background for ELD Students)

-I would
-I would
lesson.
-I would
-I would

prepare to teach the lesson in English to the class.

identify the concepts that needed to be taught and how to represent them in the
them demonstrate and explain the concept to the students.
then start the lesson on the concepts for the students.

Direct Method, Natural Approach,

Communicative Language Teaching (Horwitz, 2013).
Presentation/ Learning Activities (Strategy Steps)

(includes language and content objectives, comprehensible input, strategies , interaction, feedback

-I would use colored blocks to explain what singular and plural forms are and how they are
used in language.
-I would use miniatures of cars/trucks to explain what they are and how they are used.
-I would then let the students use and feel the blocks and miniatures so that they could
connect to the lesson and its concepts and therefore understand the lesson.
-The students would them tell me what they understood about the concepts presented to
them.
Direct Method, Natural Approach, Communicative Language
Teaching (Horwitz, 2013).
Practice and Application

(Meaningful activities, interaction, strategies, practice and application, feedback)

-I would provide guided practice for the students in connecting to the concept.
-I would give students additional time for practice using the blocks and miniatures to
understand the concepts.
-I would review the students understanding of the lesson by how they demonstrated their
learning of it.
-I would also review the feedback the parents gave me on their students learning.
Review and Assessment: (What specific assessment tools are being used)

The assessment tools that are being used is in the progress in how the students
demonstrate their understanding and learning of the lesson. More progress is being made if
the students understand the manipulatives and concepts in the lesson and how they are
used and presented. I would then be able to further explaining the concept to any student
that might of not of fully grasp it the first time. This would allow me to know the learning
pace of each individual student in regards to lessons of similar nature.
Extension:
What are your next steps for future lessons?

For me to raise the complexity of the manipulatives and concepts being used in the lessons.
This would further the understanding the students showed and how they demonstrated
their learning of it and it would also help develop lessons of similar nature in the future.
ReflectionWhat do you anticipate to be a problem for specific students?

In how the students understood the vocabulary/language being used

to explain the manipulatives and concepts of the lesson. It would depend on how
the student responded in their feedback on the lesson.
Content Objective- It would depend on how the students demonstrated their
learning of the concepts in the lesson. This would show how the lesson need to be
adapted furthered to the students individual needs.
ELD Objective-

What would likely go well? Why?

The students would understand the manipulatives and concepts being taught to them in
the lesson. The complexity of the manipulatives and concepts used in the lesson would
then become more complex. They would be able to advance to more advance lessons.
What would you like to be more sure about?

That the students would be able to understand more complex manipulatives and
concepts in more advance lessons. Their learning pace would keep at a steady pace with
that of the lessons. Their educational learning would therefore expand even further. My

lesson plans would therefore also be able to develop even more.

What theory or theorists would most strongly support use of this strategy?

The theories that support this strategy are the direct method, natural approach, and
communicative language teaching. In the direct method, the students and teacher focus
and listening and speaking. In the natural approach, the students would participate in
small group conversational activities with each other and follow instructions given to
them by the teacher to complete said activity. In the communicative language teaching,
the students would similarly do the same as in the natural approach. These three
theories are similar in how they support the strategy above.
