The CPU is the brain of the

computer. It processes the instructions
from the computer user and manages
information throughout the computer
system. The CPU is housed in the main
computer case to which all other
components and parts such as the
monitor and the keyboard are
connected.

These are the hardware

devices that inputs data
into the computer for
processing.

The keyboard is a device that

allows the user to enter information and
instructions into a computer. The layout
of the keys is mostly similar to a typewriter
keyboard.

A mouse is a small device that

allows the user to select and move
images on the computer screen. The
movement of the mouse along a flat
surface like table is reflected by the
movement of the mouse cursor or the
mouse pointer (an arrow shaped image)
on the monitor screen.

A rod-like device often used by

people who play computer games.

converts images such as

photographs into digital images that the
computer can manipulate.

Mostly common in tablet PC,

usually require a stylus for accessing it.

used to input sounds such as the

human voice which can activate computer
commands in conjunction with voice
recognition software.

inputs images to the computer to

communicate with other computer
users.

The modem is a device that

allows a given computer to share data
or otherwise communicate with another
computer through a telephone line.

Provides permanent storage of

data in the computer.

Is a form of computer storage. Today it takes

the form of Integrated circuits that allow
stored data to be accessed in any order.
Random refers to the idea that any piece
of data can be returned in a constant
time, regardless of its physical location and
whether or not it is related to the previous
piece of data.

CD Writer - a
device used for
both reading and
writing data to and
from a CD.

DVD (digital versatile disc) - a popular type of removable media that

is the same dimensions as a CD but stores up to 6 times as much
information. It is the most common way of transferring digital video.

DVD-ROM Drive a device used for

reading data
from a DVD.

Acronym for Compact DiskRead-Only Memory. It is a high-capacity,

storage device that uses compact disc
technology to store large amounts of
information, up to 700 Megabytes (Mb),
which is the equivalent of some 300,000
pages of text, on a single disc

The floppy disk, also called a diskette,

is one device that stores data. It is
removable and can be transferred
between computers. The floppy disk fills
the same role in a computer that the
cassette does for the stereo.

They are removable storage device

connected to the usb port of a system
unit.

These are the external

hardware devices that
transfer information from
the computers CPU to the
computer user.
Monitor
Printer
Speaker

The monitor is a TV screen that displays

the text and other instructions inputted
by the computer user, as well as the
responses generated by the computer
itself.
LCD monitor (liquid crystal display)
CRT monitor (cathode ray tube)

INKJET,
LASER,
DOT MATRIX

The printer is an output device

hardware that produces a paper copy
(also known as hard copy) of the
information generated by the computer.
This is opposed to information stored in
electronic format on the computer itself on
devices such as floppy disk and the CDROM drive, which is also known as soft
copy. Remember, hard copy equals
physical. Soft copy equals electronics.

Speakers are the hardware

components that emit sound from the
computer. Computer speakers are
generally identical the speakers used in
ordinary audio system. One can usually
connect regular stereo speakers to a
computer and have them work normally.

it supplies power to
run the rest of the
computer.

The AVR is a device connected to

the power outlet into which the computer
connects its power cord. It protects the
computer from damage caused by
electrical fluctuation such as power spikes
and surges. Such damage can be very
destructive; a sudden high power surge
can short-circuit the electronic components
of your computer and render it useless.

An uninterruptible power supply, also

uninterruptible power source, UPS or
battery/flywheel backup, is an electrical
apparatus that provides emergency power
to a load when the input power source fails.
