Homework Brownian Motion

Analysis
First, I plugged the Data send to us into Origin and subtracted any original displacement to get 0/0
as starting point. I let Origin Calculate the MSD, so I could graph the MSD vs. t plot. To do so, I
squared the displacement and then added up all columns (stepwise). Now I had a dependency of the
MSD to the time. Since there were taken 32 pictures per second, my timescale is 1/32 s. Now
that I had all the needed Data I plotted everything expected.
Calculation
x 2 =2nDt Using the slope of MSD vs t graph we can calculate the diffusion coefficient
w/ n=2
x 2/ 4t=D=0,33975 for water dividing by 4t we get
x 2 / 4t=D=0,0346 for MC

Now,
n=

kT
1,381023298
=
6Dr
6D1106

n=6,4211016 for water which is

n=6,3051015 for MC

Discussion
Due to the non-linearity of the graph for water (probably due to some flow) the value for D and n
can be pretty different from what I calculated. The graph of MC on the other hand, was pretty
linear, so the slope could be very well calculated.

Note: The graphs were sent separately since, I couldn't import them into Open Office.
