Note from the Teachers

We have experienced lots of changes here in the past
few weeks. Five kids left the facility after the last
parole hearing and transitions like these can be a little
hard on the kids who stay behind. With our newly
diminished numbers, things feel pretty quiet around
here.
On another note, we wanted to share with you an
inspiring story on never giving up. A few weeks ago, our
registrar received a call from Provo Adult Ed.
requesting transcripts from a student who attended
Foothill High in 1987. Thats almost 30 years ago!
Apparently, this student is working toward finishing
his high school diploma so that he can become a
counselor. We were able to find his transcript and send
it on to Provo. We wish him the best of luck and are proud
of him for choosing to continue his education, no matter
how long its been!

What Were Learning!

Social Studies
This month we have been discussing
the workings of Congress and the
Senate. We studied Lyndon Johnsons
tenure as Senate Majority leader and
discussed what it takes to succeed
in leadership roles. To finish the
unit, students participated in a
role-playing activity in which they
created
a
budget
through
Congressional compromise.
Math
In addition to regular coursework,
each student is studying customized
math vocabulary, which is an
important part of the Utah Core
Curriculum.

English
We have finished S.E. Hintons book
The
Outsiders
. The students loved it and
all commented on the fact that they
could really relate to the story, and
that it has great lessons in it they can
learn from.
We had one student graduate on Feb. 19,
and a total of five paroled on Feb. 20.
This will greatly change our dynamics
for school, but we will continue to
work on reading and writing during
English.
Science
We are continuing to use Grad Point as
much as possible in helping students
achieve the states requirements for
high school graduation in the
curriculum area of science.

March Teacher Profile:

Our teacher profile this month is on
our Principal, Steve Schofield. Here
are some fun facts about Mr.
Schofield...
Years Teaching School:
11th year in
Alternative Education
Favorite School Subject:
English. I
love reading, but some of my favorites
include To Kill a Mockingbird, Death
of a Salesman, the Grapes of Wrath,
and all John Grisham novels.
Favorite Movie:
Napoleon Dynamite,
Back to the Future, and Indiana
Jones.
Favorite Band:
Beatles and Beach
Boys and most anything from 60s and
70s.
Would you rather fight a horse-sized
duck or 100 duck-sized horses?:
I am
not a fighter, but if the opportunity
presented itself, I would prefer to
brawl with 100 duck-sized horses. I
think they would be intimidated by
me, where I would probably be more
intimidated by one horse-sized
duck... although both scenarios are
equally disturbing.
Favorite Quote: "The one thing that
doesn't abide by majority rule is a
person's conscience." Atticus Finch

Volleyball Match Against

Decker Lake
-written by a Foothill High Student
In February, seven youth set off
early to West Valley for a volleyball
match with the Decker Lake Ducks,
the very same place that the
Immortals won their first football
game. However, this game was not the
best for the Immortals. Decker lake
surprised us, one of the Youth said.
The Immortals ended up taking a
devastating loss to the Ducks.
Only hours after the loss, the
Immortals set off to Wasatch. After
an all-out war, the Immortals walked
away with yet another defeat. Back
in their rooms, the Immortals
captain told everyone We are a team.
We will win and we will lose. You
can never be sure, but one thing you
can count on is always being a team.
Since then, the captain of the team
has been released. One of the youth
on the team
commented,
five of us are
gone, but gone
or not we will
always be a
team, we will
always
be
brothers
