Course Description
This course aims to provide students with the knowledge and skills needed to grow as English speakers and
listeners. It will do so by providing an environment that fosters students communicative interactions, allowing
the students to present their opinions, ideas and experiences without fear of criticism, or embarrassment. By
revealing various lexicons, idioms and styles of spoken English, and guiding the students through the use of
each, the course should provide students with tools needed to succeed as second-language learners.

Attendance
Attendance is required to every class unless you have an excuse paper from your department office or a
doctors note. Three late arrivals equals one absence (3 lates = 1 absence). Students who miss 25% or more of
the classes will receive an F grade in this course.
Participation
Low or no participation in class is the same as being late (3 low participations = 1 absence). Low participation
includes not doing the homework and activities in class, not being prepared, texting on your cell phone, and/or
falling asleep. NOTE: Even if you have an excused absence, it MAY still affect your PARTICIPATION
Participation is 15% of your final grade. Every class you must bring your textbook, a notebook, and something
to write with. As this is a speaking course, it is an expectation that you will spend a significant amount of time
speaking in class. (Often in groups or pairs) Students who actively engage in speaking activities will therefore
be rewarded with higher participation marks; students who do not, will receive lower marks. While it is not a
requirement that you speak perfect English, you are expected to speak in class.
