Course Description
This course aims to provide students with the knowledge and skills needed to grow as English speakers and
listeners. It will do so by providing an environment that fosters students communicative interactions, allowing
the students to present their opinions, ideas and experiences without fear of criticism, or embarrassment. By
revealing various lexicons, idioms and styles of spoken English, and guiding the students through the use of
each, the course should provide students with tools needed to succeed as second-language learners.

Course Objectives: At the conclusion of this course, students will be able:

1. To feel more confident in their ability to maintain conversations in English.
2. To have a clear understanding of English conversation and listening skills.
3. To work in groups, using English to collaborate ideas, opinions and researched information.

Attendance
Attendance is required to every class unless you have an excuse paper from your department office or a
doctors note. Three late arrivals equals one absence (3 lates = 1 absence). Students who miss 25% or more of
the classes will receive an F grade in this course.

Participation
Low or no participation in class is the same as being late (3 low participations = 1 absence). Low participation
includes not doing the homework and activities in class, not being prepared, texting on your cell phone, and/or
falling asleep. NOTE: Even if you have an excused absence, it MAY still affect your PARTICIPATION

Participation is 15% of your final grade. Every class you must bring your textbook, a notebook, and something
to write with. As this is a speaking course, it is an expectation that you will spend a significant amount of time
speaking in class. (Often in groups or pairs) Students who actively engage in speaking activities will therefore
be rewarded with higher participation marks; students who do not, will receive lower marks. While it is not a
requirement that you speak perfect English, you are expected to speak in class.

Presentations and Conferences

*Detailed information will be provided during semester.
You are required to do two presentations (in groups and/or individually), each worth 15%, totaling to 30% of
your final grade. There will also be two conferences, worth 20% each.
Other Materials
Students are required to have a HEADSET WITH MICROPHONE. We will be doing some speaking and
listening exercises in the computer lab from time to time. It is advisable you have a working microphone to
interact with the videos.
Additionally, we will be using several smart phone apps in class and out. YES, Smartphones are OK! Please
keep in mind normal rules of etiquette still apply (no kakaotalk, texting in class). Often, you may be called
upon to search things on the internet. Therefore, having a phone CHARGED is essential. Also, to reduce costs,
make sure you have WIFI in this building. THIS IS THE STUDENTS RESPONSIBILIY to arrange.
Useful FREE APPS
