Visualization in the Classroom

We hear so often in university that visualization is an important teaching

strategy but its easily forgotten once we have the pressure of getting the
curriculum finished before the end of the year. I have so enjoyed being a part of this
cohort because its cemented in my mind, again, how important it is to give
students a chance to visualize with concrete and semi-concrete materials. In my
math class, we have used the attribute blocks, Math Line, base-10 blocks, counters,
and diagrams to help students really grasp the concepts that were learning.
After using the Equals Math materials with my students, two of my students
have been introduced to multiplication and have become masters of solving
multiplication problems with several strategies! I am currently working on trying to
make our Equals Math area very visually appealing and more organized to continue
to improve.
