Thoughts from the RTI conference presented by Pat Quinn

Some useful teaching techniquesDouble the wait time after a student has given an answer (It allows students
to check their answer with that of the given answer).
3 things that seperates students:
1) Ability to track data over time
2) Words Use lots of vocabulary words in context
3) Memorize ability to memorize will serve students well (Flash cards start
with 5, then 2, then 2, etc..
5 step process to increase success of all students:
1) Remove Barriers
a) Power and Control
b) Lack of student confidence
c) Lack of Relationships with peers or teachers
d) Lack of student goals and life plan
2) Teach Routines (Allows you to teach differently down the road)
4 steps to teaching routines
1) Model
2) Teach the why we do things
3) Give counterexamples it eliminates negotiations
4) Practice
3) Splitting the Class
4 week process
Week 1: Teach about individual differences
Week 2: Same worksheet (half one color/half another)
Week 3: 2 different assignments equal in length & difficulty (assign
randomly)
Week 4: 2 different assignments based on ability
4) Feedback cycle
Try something -> Get feedback -> Try again
Want students to go through feedback cycle as many times as possible
Dont evaluate strategies on worst case students
Why wont some teachers change?
1) Power and control offer choices of how and when they change
- start sentences with I statements I have had a lot of
luck with
2) Lack of confidence
Get principal to not walk into classrooms when teachers are
trying something new
3) Lack of Relationships
4) Lack of goals some teachers dont want to improve anymore
